Why is Kelly Dodd being accused of racism?

Throughout 2020, United States citizens took the streets of America to denounce police brutality and yell that Black Lives Matter. The movement was heard around the world with citizens of all walks of life coming together to protest. Although not everyone was on board with the way some demonstrations went, Dodd landed herself in hot water.

During her bridal shower, one of her friends gave her a hat that said “Drunk Wives Matter.” The slogan was a clear take on the movement and people accused Dodd of making fun of it. The backlash was so intense that Dodd issued an apology for her lack of empathy.

“Over the weekend at my bridal shower, I got lots of gifts and briefly displayed them,” she said on an Instagram post in October. “One was a hat with a play on words since I’m about to be a wife, I’m on a Housewives TV show and might be drunk once in a while.”

Dodd said that she did not intend “to offend or make any kind of statement. She also assured her fans that she supports “Black lives and racial equality.”

During an appearance on Watch What Happens Live, Dodd once again explained what was the situation and said she supported BLM.

“That Drunk Wives Matter hat was given to me, I was trying everything on from my shower. My girlfriend gave it to me, she’s had it for a couple of years,” Dodd explained as Cohen is seen cringing at her answer. “I believe in equality, I believe in Black Lives Matter, and if I offended anybody by thinking I was mocking… I don’t want to hurt… I believe in Black Lives Matter and equality.”

What did Kelly Dodd say now?

In a preview for the second part of the RHOC Season 15 reunion, Dodd is heard yelling out that she’s Black. The claim shocked fans that were watching the episode as this was the first time she’s ever said that. Fans were previously made aware that Dodd is of Mexican descent.

Although the context in which Dodd says that she’s Black is not known, that has not stopped fans from lashing out at the reality TV personality once again.

“Hold up! Kelly is now Black? I thought she was Mexican? Or does she now identify as Afro/Mexican? I am so confused,” a user replied on a Queens of Bravo Instagram post.

“Whew, self-sabbotage at its finest,” a fan said.

“Here goes the ‘I’m Black’ line. That’s always the go-to that is used for damage control. We should’ve [seen] that one coming,” a viewer added.

“This is the icing on the cake,” another viewer posted.

“To blatantly say, ‘I’m Black’ when you have no relation or connection to the race is beyond stupid and ignorante,” another passionate fan wrote.

“What the hell Kelly?” another user asked.

The Real Housewives of Orange County Season 15 reunion continues next Wednesday at 9 p.m. ET on Bravo.
