During Part 4 of The Real Housewives of Potomac Season 6 reunion, rapper and guest host Nicki Minaj filled Andy Cohen’s chair to question the ladies. While talking with Candiace Dillard, she asked about her burgeoning music career and urged her to sing her single “Drive Back” acapella on the spot. After hesitation, Dillard eventually did, impressing the other cast members and Minaj, who danced along.

During a break, Dillard’s husband, Chris Bassett, admitted he didn’t like Minaj’s line of questioning. The singer and reality star explained his frustration and her hesitation during an interview with Angela Yee’s Lip Service podcast.

Candiace Dillard explaind Chris Bassett’s frustration with Nicki Minaj

Candiace Dillard later explained the situation during a Dec. 2021 interview with Angela Yee’s Lip Service podcast. Sitting down with the radio personality and her co-hosts Gigi Maguire, Stephanie Santiago, and Laura Mora, Dillard first explained her apprehension to singing acapella on the spot, noting she preferred a different song.

According to the reality star, she thought a gospel song served her vocal range the best and wanted to sing one that showcased her voice.

However, Bravo didn’t have the license to sing a gospel song she had ready to go. Therefore, Dillard had to sing “Drive Back” to avoid a copyright issue.

Bassett likely wanted his wife to sing a song that best showed her voice, explaining his frustration at Minaj.

Why Nicki Minaj asked Candiace Dillard to sing during ‘RHOP’ reunion

Guest host and rapper Nicki Minaj grilled the ladies during the final part of The Real Housewives of Potomac reunion for its sixth season.

When questioning Candiace Dillard, she asked how her mother’s comments put a wedge in her relationship with her husband and encouraged her to set boundaries with her mom.

Minaj also inquired about Dillard’s budding singing career, including how her album placed on the Billboard charts, and requested her to sing an acapella song on the spot. The rapper asked her to belt her “Drive Back” single, as its music video was featured in the show, but she hesitated.

After Minaj, and the rest of the cast members, heavily encouraged her, Dillard finally sang it, much to everyone’s enjoyment. Even though the rapper gave her a co-sign, Dillard’s husband, Chris Bassett, didn’t appreciate it.

Chris Bassett got upset with Nicki Minaj after the line of questioning

During a bathroom break, Dillard noticed Bassett’s annoyance. He walked on stage irritated and immediately let his wife know he didn’t like Minaj’s questions.

She asked what “exactly” rubbed him the wrong way, and he briefly pointed out he didn’t like the direction the guest host took with her questions. Dillard explained it didn’t bother her because she felt Minaj grilled the other cast members as well.

Andy Cohen walked over and congratulated Dillard while assuring Bassett the moment served her. Additionally, Gizelle Bryant tried to point how it would help Dillard’s singing career. However, he still made it known he preferred it to happen differently. The reunion ended without addressing Bassett’s annoyance again.
