The emotional fifth season of The Real Housewives of Potomac was filmed before the COVID-19 pandemic. OG cast member Karen Huger referred to the lockdown as a “two-edged sword” in a recent interview, believing it helped unite the cast for season 6.

The cast filmed emotional ‘RHOP’ season 5 before COVID-19

Before the coronavirus pandemic, the ladies filmed season 5 of The Real Housewives of Potomac, which became their most emotional one to date.

It featured a physical altercation between once close friends Candiace Dillard and Monique Samuels that ultimately divided the group. While Karen Huger and Ashey Darby felt their friend deserved another chance, Gizelle Bryant, Robyn Dixon, and newcomer Wendy Osefo thought differently and refused to film with her.

At the reunion, Samuels and Dillard could not find any resolve, and the former chose to walk away from the franchise. During season 6, the cast rarely talked about the situation.

However, Dillard hadn’t fully moved on as she admitted to still being angry with Huger and Darby for their continued friendship with Samuels.

Karen Huger thinks the COVID-19 pandemic helped unite the ‘RHOP’ cast

In July 2021, a few months before RHOP Season 6 premiered, the Grand Dame teased the upcoming installment in an interview with Entertainment Tonight.

She spoke about the “rough” season 5 reunion, noting she “respects” decisions made regarding information that came out during it.

The La Dame owner then pointed out that the coronavirus pandemic helped put things into “perspective” for them after an emotional last season. When asked how the lockdown affected the cast, Huger joked they were nearly always “on top of each other” during filming.

Referring to the pandemic as a “two-edged sword,” the OG cast member explained it encouraged them to have hard conversations they previously avoided or didn’t want to have, helping them “grow.” As a result, the La Dame owner feels the pandemic reunited the cast following a stirring season 5.

From the first season, OG cast members Huger and Bryant have butt heads and frequently hurl insults at one another. While they have hit below the belt, such as implying one has a sexually transmitted disease or publicly making fun of the other’s husband’s tax issues, the longtime associates still have love for one another.

During part two of the RHOP Season 6 reunion, the ladies compared their tiffs to Dillard’s several heated exchanges, pointing out that they never go too far.

For the first time on the show, Bryant later got emotional when recalling how much it meant to her that Huger still genuinely cares for her daughters. The La Dame owner admitted that the two might not see eye-to-eye on everything, but it doesn’t change how she sees Bryant’s kids as she practically watched them grow up.

Huger praised her co-worker for being a good mother, and the ladies were able to hug and make up. The Real Housewives of Potomac airs Sundays on Bravo.
