Since 2017, Riverdale has taken viewers on a twist-filled and sometimes very bizarre adventure through its titular town. Fans watched the “Core Four” characters — Archie Andrews, Jughead Jones, Betty Cooper, and Veronica Lodge — develop a deep bond that has lasted from high school to adulthood. The town has survived serial killers, gang wars, a mob takeover, and even a cult. Now, six seasons later, Riverdale will reach its 100th episode milestone. The CW undoubtedly has something crazy planned for its Archie Comics adaptation. Here’s what to expect from the episode, including the air date and synopsis.

When will ‘Riverdale’ reach its 100th episode?

The 100th episode of Riverdale is scheduled for a premiere date of Dec. 14 as part of season 6.

Interestingly, the episode also marks the final episode of Riverdale’s five-part event, “Rivervale,” which takes place in an alternate universe. Things are much more sinister and dangerous in Rivervale, and nobody is safe from their demise. What happens in Rivervale does not stay in Rivervale — according to showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, RiverVale’s stories will affect RiverDale when season 6 continues in March. It’s certainly a bit confusing at times, but hopefully, things will make sense in the end.

In an interview with Decider, Aguirre-Sacasa said the timing of the 100th episode really shaped its plot. Had it not fallen within the five-episode event timeline, the episode might have looked “very different.” He said:

It’s funny, I was talking to a friend about how Riverdale always has back luck in terms of timings, and when we premiere, and pandemic hits, when everything happens … This is one of those truly rare instances of things actually worked out beautifully, where the hundredth episode coincided with the end of our five-episode event. And it’s great because the 100th episode wouldn’t work unless it was both things. If it wasn’t the 100th episode, we would have told a very different story in 6×05.

The ‘Riverdale’ 100th episode synopsis focuses on Jughead Jones

Eventually, Rivervale will have to somehow transform back into Riverdale. It looks like Jughead (played by Cole Sprouse) might have something to do with that. As Comicbook.com notes, the 100th episode is called “The Jughead Paradox.” The synopsis reads, “Unnerved by a series of strange happenings around him, Jughead’s quest for answers leads him to uncover the truth about Rivervale.”

Jughead has served as a Rod Sterling-type narrator for the “Rivervale” event, so it only makes sense for him to end things. Perhaps he’ll become aware of the existence of an alternate universe and send everyone back to the other timeline?

Fans will see Archie Andrews return — and maybe others

Episode 1 of the “Rivervale” event delivered a shocking twist: Archie (KJ Apa), the show’s long-running hero, died. What’s worse is that Rivervale’s residents, including his closest friends and family, sacrificed him in a Pagan ritual.

Aguirre-Sacasa has assured that Archie is definitely dead and will stay that way for some time. However, the showrunner told Decider that fans can expect to see Archie return in the 100th episode. It’s unclear if he’ll come back to life, appear as a ghost or flashback, or if Rivervale’s timeline will be reversed.

If Archie’s coming back, then there’s a solid chance the other dead characters will also return. So far, Rivervale has claimed the lives of Archie and Toni Topaz (Vanessa Morgan), and Aguirre-Sacasa said more characters will die later. Truly anything can happen in Riverdale.

Tune in to Riverdale Season 6’s “Rivervale” event on Tuesday nights at 9 p.m. ET on The CW.
