The Voyeur mystery finally gains traction on ‘Riverdale’

From the beginning of the season, Riverdale has been hinting that there’s a larger mystery at play. Apparently, while Archie (KJ Apa) and his friends were busy dealing with the pesky Stonewall kids and faking Jughead’s (Cole Sprouse) death, the mystery voyeur was lurking around town secretly making videos.

Now that the Stonewall drama has been put to rest, Betty and Jughead are starting to focus on the voyeur mystery. They’ve been working with Betty and Jughead’s FBI agent half-brother, Charles (Wyatt Nash) to analyze evidence and uncover the villain’s identity.

In the final episodes of the season, the voyeur sends the kids a video of the shack where Sheriff Minetta (Henderson Wade) and Hermione (Marisol Nichols) had their affair. When Betty and Jughead go to the shack, they find another tape. This one shows a group of people wearing Betty, Jughead, Veronica, and Archie masks killing the school’s principal, Mr. Honey (Herr Smith).

Who the Voyeur could be

With all the questionable characters on Riverdale, anyone could be the villain. It could be someone the kids know, or it might be an old enemy from their parents’ past. But in an interview with TV Guide, showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa revealed that he or she is someone who is personally invested in the main characters.

“When the voyeur is revealed, there will be a very personal reason for why the voyeur is doing this, but I think thematically, it is this idea of deconstructing the crimes, and weirdly the idea of the show Riverdale, which is the idea that kids can experience crimes and gruesome murders and that must do something to them,” he said. “It must affect them in some way. We don’t always play that, but that’s what it feels like the voyeur is interested in — the idea of trauma and what that does to a town and a group of kids.”

The voyeur is ultimately a bad guy. But Aguirre-Sacasa also noted that through the videotapes, the villain will force the kids to face their trauma and move on from Riverdale.

“The voyeur is a very insidious villain,” he added. “What the voyeur is doing is recreating horrific crimes that happened in Riverdale, that happened to our characters. In a way, it sort of is demanding that the kids, who have become desensitized to violence or moved on and processed it a certain way, look at their high school experience and these traumas, and deal with them before they leave Riverdale. That is sort of a theoretical, highfaluting idea of what the voyeur is doing.”

Who ‘Riverdale’ fans think the voyeur is

By now, Riverdale fans now that anything can happen and literally anyone could be a villain. In the last few seasons, Betty’s dad Hal Cooper (Lochlyn Munro) turned out to be the Black Hood. And Cheryl’s (Madeline Pesch) father, Clifford Blossom (Barclay Hope) was unveiled as her brother Jason’s murderer.

This season, some fans think that the voyeur is Betty and Jughead’s confidant, Charles. He’s been conveniently present through all of their deadly charades, and could easily make and deliver them these creepy videos.

“Charles…I know he is a quite suspicious character (evidenced by the fact that he has a relationship with Chic, and seems quite mysterious apart from that) but there’s a moment in the season that supports the idea that he is the one behind the tapes,” one fan wrote on Reddit, pointing out the episode in which Charles show up at Betty’s house soon after she received a tape.

“Who knew [sic] about the attempted murder of Jughead, who ad access to the original videos of the murder of Jason Blossom and midge, by whom, Jughead had the tapes?” another Redditor wrote. “Charles Smith.”

One fan suggested that it could be Charles or someone else from Betty or Jughead’s family. But they also noted, that because there were more people in the last video, Charles’ FBI friends could be involved.

“A lot of things point to Charles,” the Reddit user wrote.  “But also to anyone else in the Smith/Jones house. But it does not explain the killer-6 in the last episode. it COULD be Charles with other people from the FBI junior program.”

The voyeur could easily be Charles. But with Riverdale, fans have learned to expect the unexpected. So, until Season 5 rolls around, it will just have to be anyone’s guess.
