The Riverdale Season 5 premiere opened up the possibility for Archie Andrews (KJ Apa) and Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart) to get together. But, is there hope for Barchie after the big time jump? Recently, Apa teased what’s coming next for Archie and Betty as Riverdale continues — here’s what he said.

Why ‘Riverdale’ fans think Betty and Archie could get together in season 5

Camila Mendes (who plays Veronica Lodge), KJ Apa (who plays Archie Andrews), and Lili Reinhart (who plays Betty Cooper) speak at the "Riverdale" Special Video Presentation and Q&A during 2019 Comic-Con International at San Diego Convention Center on July 21, 2019 in San Diego, California.

Toward the end of Riverdale Season 4, Betty and Archie got into arguments with their respective partners. Betty confronted Jughead Jones (Cole Sprouse) about their future after graduation. Meanwhile, Veronica Lodge (Camila Mendes) was upset because Archie hid details about Hiram Lodge’s (Mark Consuelos) deteriorating health.

Regardless, Varchie and Bughead were both in danger. Then, as they say, one thing led to another. While practicing for the school’s variety show, Betty and Archie kissed. That said, the childhood friends were conflicted. They couldn’t stop thinking about each other. But, they loved Jughead and Veronica. So, Betty and Archie decided to end the possibility of getting together.

“I love Jughead, and you love Veronica,” Betty told Archie. “Everything’s changing in the next few weeks. You and I feel safe with each other, we always have. I don’t know. But, I do not want to lose or hurt Jughead. … Whatever this is — or was — it’s just over.”

Meanwhile, Archie told Veronica about kissing Betty during the Riverdale Season 5 premiere. At prom, Veronica revealed her plan to defer Barnard College for a year to be with Archie. So, Archie came clean. Then the couple decided to break up after leaving Riverdale.

“After graduation, we go our separate ways, Archie,” Veronica said. “No big drama, no fireworks. I’ll go to Barnard, and you do whatever feels right to you.”

Archie and Veronica also decided to keep Jughead in the dark about the kiss because they didn’t want to “blow up” his relationship with Betty.

KJ Apa says ‘Riverdale’ Season 5 will ‘dive’ into Betty and Archie’s relationship

As you may know, Riverdale Season 5 will include a seven-year time jump at the end of the third episode. But, even so, it seems everyone will be drawn back to the town.

“After high school, everyone goes their separate ways,” Apa told Entertainment Tonight ahead of the Riverdale Season 5 premiere. “The time jump will be a catalyst for what all brings us all back to Riverdale, and we all become teachers at Riverdale High.”

Now, Riverdale fans will have to wait and see what the writers have planned for Archie’s love story. But, Apa admitted he’s been filming more with Reinhart. So, viewers will get a chance to see more from Betty and Archie.

“I feel like Archie and Betty really haven’t had an opportunity to —  just because of the other relationships they’ve had with Veronica and Jughead — to really dive into their relationship,” Apa said. “It’s really funny because I’ve been so used to shooting scenes with Cami, and I’ve mainly been with Cami on set. So, it’s funny when the roles start reversing.”

He continued, “It’s just interesting because it’s like, ‘Oh, this what it’s like to work with Lili every day.’ It’s a completely different vibe, it’s amazing, and it’s fun because it’s different. It changes my day as a human being able to spend time with different people and two of my best friends.”

Meanwhile, when speaking with TVLine, Apa confirmed that Riverdale Season 5 will delve deeper into Betty and Archie’s feelings about each other.

“I do really feel like a lot of his relationship with Betty,” Apa said. “Where that goes and how they feel about each other, is something that we explore in the time jump.”

Whether Riverdale Season 5 highlights Barchie or Varchie, it definitely seems fans can’t count on an endgame couple just yet.

“No one is even married yet,” Apa told Entertainment Tonight. “I know it’s just a show … but ‘endgame’ is, like, what? Who they believe that person is going to end up dying with, right? We’ll see what this season brings because there’s a lot of sh*t going on this season that might change people’s minds, maybe.”

Riverdale Season 5 airs Wednesday nights on The CW.
