In 2018, actor Robert Pattinson joked that he would get Botox if the Twilight films were ever rebooted. While it’s not an official reboot of the series, Stephenie Meyer’s novel Midnight Sun is officially happening. On May 4, the author announced the book, which is Twilight from Edward Cullen’s perspective, will be released on Aug. 4, 2020.

Robert Pattinson joked about a ‘Twilight’ reboot

During his time playing Edward Cullen, Pattinson was known for his almost hatred of the role. In interviews, he frequently made his distaste for Twilight known and detailed the anxiety he felt about being part of such a life-changing experience.

“There’s nothing you can do about it. That’s the way it is. But it is weird being part of that, kind of representing something you don’t particularly like…,” he said in a 2011 interview with Vanity Fair.

The final movie of the franchise, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2, premiered in 2012. In a 2018 interview with Variety, Pattinson joked about Twilight being rebooted.

“I was literally just talking to my agent about it,” he said, per Entertainment Tonight. “The amount of time I’ve spent moisturizing, I am ready to play 17 at a moment’s notice. Ready! I’ve got the Botox out! I can do it.”

Robert Pattinson does not hate the franchise anymore

While Pattinson struggled with the fame the role of Edward Cullen brought, he no longer feels negatively about his time with the franchise.

“It’s lovely now that the mania is not so intense. People come up (to me) and just have very fond memories of it. It’s a really sweet thing. I think the only scary part was right in the thick of it all, when it was very, very intense. Now the intensity has died down and it’s just very warm memories,” Pattinson said.

While Pattinson now looks back on his time playing Edward Cullen positively, this hasn’t stopped fans from joking about how Midnight Sun could affect Pattinson.

“the way Robert pattinson is never gonna be free from twilight like he tasted freedom and Stephanie snatched it RIGHT back lmaooo,” a Twitter user wrote.

“if robert pattinson is offered a bag and decides to be fake and take on the role of edward again i personally am willing to act like he hasn’t been trashing the twilight films for 9 years straight,” a fan tweeted.

‘Midnight Sun’ comes out in August 2020

Meyer originally planned to release Midnight Sun years ago, but the first few chapters of the book leaked online, leading Meyer to indefinitely halt the release.

“I did not want my readers to experience Midnight Sun before it was completed, edited and published. I think it is important for everybody to understand that what happened was a huge violation of my rights as an author, not to mention me as a human being. So, where does this leave Midnight Sun? My first feeling was that there was no way to continue,” Meyer wrote on her website.

However, Meyer eventually had a change of heart. On May 4, she announced Midnight Sun will come out on Aug. 4. Meyer also published a letter on her website explaining why she chose to release the book this year, writing:

“I hope this announcement doesn’t seem ill-timed; I really considered delaying the release until the world was back to normal. However, 1) who knows when that will be? And 2) you guys have waited long enough. Much longer than long enough, actually.

I don’t know how everyone else is coping, but right now books are my main solace and happiest escape. Personally, I would be nothing but delighted if one of my favorite authors announced something new for me to read. (No pressure, Laini Taylor.) So, I hope this announcement gave you some pleasure and something fun to look forward to.”
