The ‘Roswell New, Mexico’ cast and teased relationship drama in season 2

Roswell, New Mexico show creator, Carina Adly MacKenzie, joined stars, Nathan Dean Parsons, Heather Hemmens, and Michael Trevino in speaking with Entertainment Weekly on a panel at SCAD aTVFest. They dished some juicy relationship details about the characters in season 2 of the show.

Heather Hemmens on Maria and Michael

Ironically, the town clairvoyant, Maria, played by Hemmens, remained in the dark about the extraterrestrial events happening in the town of Roswell until season 2. When she learned Michael’s secret, it initially caused friction between the budding couple. What’s more, she discovered that for her best friend, Alex, Michael was the one that got away.

At SCAD aTVFest, Hemmens opened up about the complex relationship between her character and Michael. She said this about the duo:

I think it’s always going to be complicated for Michael and Maria. You know, I was saying earlier it’s like they have this little tiny spark and they’re both kind of huffing on it trying to get, you know, trying to get the fire going. Get a little warmth in there, but it’s complicated. I think if it wasn’t complicated, it wouldn’t be a TV relationship. So we get to see that play out some more over the season.

In season 1 of the show, Trevino’s character, Kyle, pined over Liz Ortecho, who only had eyes for Max, an alien with a mysterious past. Kyle partnered with Liz in season 2 to perform an experimental procedure to save Max. Trevino gave insights into Kyle’s motivation for helping Liz and his decision to move on. He said this at SCAD aTVFest:

Kyle’s always been there for Liz, all throughout season 1, and helping in any way that he can. Almost to the point where he’s putting in — not in danger — but really going against certain things with work in the hospital, and kind of breaking rules for her. And at some point, you reach a ceiling there. And I think we’ll see how that moment plays out in season 2.

MacKenzie also weighed in about the Kyle and Liz relationship, saying, “Kyle does have to think about how much energy he’s putting into helping Liz.” She also noted, “He does kind of grapple with his old relationship with Liz, and what their new relationship is gonna look like.”
