Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex’s relationship has been an object of scrutiny and fascination since they began dating. The two have both given up a lot to be with one another. Meghan gave up her acting career and relative control over her life when she married Harry and became part of the royal family. Later, Harry walked away from his life as a working royal so that they could have a more peaceful life together.

Though Harry’s choice to step down was a big decision, it’s not exactly a surprise as he has reportedly been obsessed with Meghan since the very beginning of their relationship so it makes sense that he would do something so drastic for her.

Meghan and Harry’s first date

In 2016, a friend of Meghan’s introduced the two. They met for their first date at Soho restaurant at The Dean Street Townhouse.

“On that first date at Soho House’s Dean Street Townhouse, Harry quickly realized that impressing Meghan was going to be tougher than just giving her one of his big smiles,” new book Finding Freedom: Harry and Meghan and the Making of A Modern Family by royal experts Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand reveals. “Perhaps she sensed his nervousness, because the couple were somewhat bashful at first. However, it didn’t take long for them to start chatting easily.”

By the end of the date, it was clear there was something more between them.

“At the end of the evening, which had lasted almost three hours, Harry and Meghan went their separate ways,” the book reads. “Despite the palpable attraction between them, there was no goodbye kiss, no expectation, just a hint that something was there and they hoped to see each other again soon.”

Prince Harry was obsessed

That first date was all it took to get Prince Harry hooked.

“Almost immediately they were almost obsessed with each other,” a friend of the couple told the reporters. “It was as if Harry was in a trance.”

The next night, the two met up at the same restaurant again.

“Harry knew they would be together at that point,” a source said. “She was ticking every box.”

Meghan felt the same way but almost couldn’t believe how great the date had gone.

“Do I sound crazy when I say this could have legs?” she asked her friend over the phone.

“He definitely didn’t hide the fact that he was keen,” one of Meghan’s friends said. “He wanted her to know he was very interested.”

It didn’t take long for things to get serious. Soon Meghan was visiting Harry at Kensington Palace and just a month and a half later the two went to Africa together.

“Six weeks later Harry said he wanted to take her on a trip,” the book says. “He told her to arrive in London and he would handle the rest. Having flown in from Toronto, Meghan spent one night with Harry at Kensington Palace before boarding a flight to Johannesburg the next morning.”

Harry protected Meghan

Soon Meghan and Harry were talking long-term. Within three months, they were saying “I love you” and Harry had become fiercely protective over Meghan.

“When he first started seeing her, Harry, sensitive to even the slightest hint of prejudice, had fallouts within his own circle,” the book reads. “When some questioned his new relationship, and whether she was suitable, he would wonder, ‘Is this about race? Is it snobbery?’ An old friend of Harry’s spent an afternoon gossiping about Meghan, making disparaging remarks about her Hollywood background. Word got back to Harry, and the prince immediately cut him off. If he was willing to confront those close to him, when it came to the media, Harry was poised for outright war.”

Given that Harry has now given up the only way of life that he has ever known for Meghan, it’s probably safe to say that his obsession with her has not faded.
