Prince Charles has been waiting his turn to take the throne for longer than any royal in British history. After serving more than 70 years as heir apparent, there’s no doubt the Queen Elizabeth’s eldest son has some major plans for what will happen once it’s his turn to lead. However, some of Charles’s critics are not looking forward to that day.

Many royal followers insist that the Prince of Wales should retire and allow his younger, more popular son Prince William to become king when Her Majesty’s record-breaking reign ends. Part of this is due to age. But they’re also worried Prince Charles is too selfish to be a good leader.

The Prince of Wales prides himself on truly connecting with his subjects during the hundreds of royal engagements he performs each year. And yet, Prince Charles has always been incredibly spoiled. It’s almost inevitable when you’re a millionaire blue-blooded royal. He’s even earned the nickname, the “Pampered Prince.”

For example, Charles insists on having his pajamas and shoelaces pressed for him each morning. One of his servants measures out a precise amount of toothpaste for him, too. Everything must be done to his exact specifications, from the way his underwear is folded to the temperature of his bathwater.

“And if anyone gets anything wrong everybody is scolded,” former royal butler Paul Burrell revealed.

One hallmark of a great leader is constantly sacrificing personal comfort for the good of others. Sadly, this is a trait Prince Charles lacks.

Some of his royal attendants complained about Prince Charles only eating two meals per day. His refusal to have lunch led to others skipping their midday meals, too.

As one royal courtier said, “When we do day visits or foreign tours, he can go the whole day without stopping for a break, which means we all have to miss our lunch as well.”

They continued: “He doesn’t seem to notice all the rumbling stomachs around him. You just learn that you have to have a big breakfast on those days.”

It’s one example of many that proves Prince Charles either doesn’t notice or doesn’t care if others are comfortable and happy — especially those of a lower social ranking.

There are many reasons why the marriage between Prince Charles and Princess Diana ended in one of the worst PR disasters in history. Diana was not entirely innocent, and yet, it’s Prince Charles’s selfishness that ultimately shattered their marriage beyond repair.

The Prince of Wales began having an affair with then Camilla Parker Bowles while he was still married. It was the ultimate example of Charles being concerned with his own personal pleasure rather than his sense of duty, his marriage vows, and even his royal obligation as heir apparent.

Even though he’s spent his whole life preparing for the role, no one is precisely sure what sort of changes Prince Charles will make when he begins his reign. No matter what, it’ll be interesting to see how Prince Charles handles wielding more power. Will he become more selfish and demanding, or become more generous? We’ll find out soon enough.
