Michael Patrick King and the writers have begun working on season 2 of And Just Like That…, the Sex and the City reboot. While King is reluctant to share much information about what Carrie Bradshaw, Miranda Hobbes, and Charlotte York will be up to in the reboot’s sophomore season, he’s happy to share that Samantha Jones and Carrie will still be chatting come season 2.

‘And Just Like That…’ explained Samantha’s absence with a falling out storyline

Kim Cattrall, the actor who portrayed Samantha Jones, was not asked to join the cast. While Cattrall wasn’t welcome on set, her character certainly was. Samantha’s absence had to be explained, and the writers behind the series decided on a falling-out storyline to explain why Samantha was no longer a part of the core group of pals.

As the series progressed, Carrie revealed that she and Samantha had a falling out after Carrie no longer needed Samantha’s public relations services. As Carrie told the story, Samantha stopped answering phone calls from Carrie, Charlotte, and Miranda before moving to Europe and disappearing entirely. Samantha returned in the form of a floral arrangement at Mr. Big’s funeral and later via text messages to Carrie.

Michael Patrick King says Samantha Jones and Carrie Bradshaw will still be texting in season 2

King isn’t interested in sharing a lot about what happens in season 2 of And Just Like That…, but he was happy to tell Variety that Samantha Jones and Carrie Bradshaw will still be texting. King didn’t mention whether Samantha would digitally interact with her other former friends in season 2, though.

King won’t share what the plan is for Samantha moving forward. Still, his enthusiastic answers seem to indicate the two former besties will have mended fences. Perhaps fans will be treated to more regular digital banter between the pals. Whether that will be enough to satiate fans who want to see Samantha Jones return to New York is anyone’s guess.

Kim Cattrall will not appear in the show, though

When season 1 ended with Carrie and Samantha meeting offscreen, fans were delighted. There was significant hope that the scene was leaving the door open for Cattrall to return to the show. That isn’t about to happen, though. Cattrall has clarified that she’s no longer interested in playing Samantha Jones. For his part, King has noted that Cattrall was not even considered for And Just Like That…

More recently, Sarah Jessica Parker has come forward to admit she doesn’t believe And Just Like That… could feature Cattrall again. Parker noted that the very public, one-sided feud would make Cattrall’s inclusion in the series awkward. While the character of Samantha is still very much a part of the story, the cast has made it clear that Cattrall is not included in this chapter of Sex and the City.
