Today, Barrymore is known for her role as a zombie mom on Netflix’s horror-comedy series Santa Clarita Diet. She went from rom coms to being a cool TV mother, which has a lot of fans wondering: How does Drew Barrymore parent her kids in real life? Read on below to find out the answer.

How many kids does Drew Barrymore have?

Ever since she was a teenager in Hollywood in the 1990s, Drew Barrymore has had a string of short-term relationships and marriages. Her most recent marriage was to Will Kopelman, who is known for his role in The Intern. The couple got married in 2012 and has two daughters together: Olive (b. 2012) and Frankie (b. 2014). Barrymore and Kopelman divorced in 2016 and are currentlyco-parenting their children together.

Drew Barrymore’s childhood turned her into a ‘traditional’ parent

Anyone who follows Barrymore will understand that she did not have the best childhood. Her father was abusive and the two of them did not have much of a relationship with each other. Meanwhile, Barrymore’s mother put her into acting gigs at just 11 months old and got her addicted to cocaine at the age of 12. Barrymore ended up emancipating herself when she was 14 years old.

It was quite a miracle that Drew Barrymore was able to get her life back on track and became a successful actress we know her as today. Nevertheless, her rough childhood taught her a lot about being a parent.

“I actually love what my mom did,” she shared on Live with Kelly and Ryan. “I wouldn’t change my own upbringing for anything because it made me such a traditionalist and conservative parent, ironically.”

Additionally, being a wild child at a young age also will help Barrymore deal with her daughters when they reach those rebellious teenage years.

“When my kids figure out some of the things that I did in my childhood, I’m like, ‘Yeah, and that makes me all the more insightful to when you’re pulling crap on me,” she once told People. “I was born for teenage girls. You’re my karma and don’t worry, I know everything you’re up to.”

Drew Barrymore doesn’t believe in giving her kids certain types of compliments

She also shared on Live with Kelly and Ryan that one insightful thing she has been learning about parenting is not praising children about how they look.

“There are all these parenting groups that will talk about, like, don’t say ‘you look pretty’, but say you’re proud of some accomplishment so [the child] can associate that with an action rather than an exterior.”

Parenting experts agree with this and advise many parents to praise their kids this way.

Drew Barrymore’s children enjoy watching her movies

While Drew Barrymore admits that she is strict with her own daughters, it does not mean that she can’t be a cool parent sometimes. She’s been seen taking them out to fun places like Candytopia and being silly togethers.

Having a mom who is a famous actress also means getting amazing perks like visiting filming sets where exciting things happen. Drew Barrymore said that she has taken her oldest daughter Olive to see Santa Clarita Diet being filmed.

“Olive was there on this season and the cop stabbed me with a fork in my hand just to test me, and Olive was there that day and she didn’t like that,” Barrymore shared on Good Morning America.

However, while Olive has not developed a taste for horror series yet, her two daughters actually do enjoy watching some of Drew Barrymore’s old movies, especially Ever After and 50 First Dates.

“I’m proud of who I am and what I’ve done, especially the messages [of these movies]” she said, “I made them exactly for what young girls and boys feel.”
