Hollywood is littered with messy celebrity breakups. However, that list doesn’t include Freddie Prinze Jr. and Sarah Michelle Gellar. They’re one of the celebrity couples still together. And time and time again, the actors prove they’re couple goals. 

Freddie Prinze Jr. and Sarah Michelle Gellar started out as friends

Before getting married in 2002, Prinze and Gellar were co-stars and friends. They met while filming 1997’s I Know What You Did Last Summer. After the movie wrapped, the two stayed in touch.

But it wasn’t until years after they’d known each other did they start dating. Getting to know each other as friends is what Prinze says makes their relationship work. 

“We just became friends. That’s one of the reasons I think our relationship has always been so good,” he told E! in 2017. “We were friends for a good two years before we ever went on a date.”

In early 2001, they were engaged and in September 2002 the couple tied the knot in Mexico. Gellar and Prinze have been going strong ever since.

Laughter is a big part of Gellar and Prinze’s relationship. As Prinze told the Evening Standard, they “try to make each other laugh.” It’s also clear from their social media, humor plays a major role in their relationship. 

In January 2020, Gellar watched the Golden Globe Awards in pajamas with Prinze’s face on them. 

And when it comes to teaching their kids during the coronavirus pandemic, Gellar and Prinze take a moment for some laughs. 

They made silly faces in a selfie Gellar posted to her Instagram on May 13, 2020. 

And joked around when Gellar was supposed to be working weeks earlier on April 20, 2020. 

It’s clear the couple doesn’t take themselves too seriously and as Prinze said, they make each other laugh. Is that not couple goals?

Prinze and Gellar are close to celebrating two decades of marriage. September 1, 2020, will mark 18 years of married life for the actors. A big feat for any couple, and an even bigger one in Hollywood.

What’s their secret to a long-lasting marriage? Put in the work. 

“I think the truth of any relationship is that, whether you’re a couple, whether you’re friends, whether you’re business partners, is you have to put the work into a relationship,” Gellar told UsWeekly in 2019. 

Judging by her and Prinze’s Instagram shots together, they do work on their relationship.

They have date nights as evidenced by adorable Instagram photos. Sometimes a date night means attending an engagement party. 

And other times it means taking selfies over drinks. 

Plus, Gellar and Prinze do sweet things together even it means being a little cheesy. Clearly, they know what it takes to make their relationship work.
