Scarlett Johansson met Colin Jost when she first hosted Saturday Night Live. That was in 2009 before Jost was doing “Weekend Update.” He was a new writer, but they hit it off. The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic interrupted their wedding plans, but Jost says in some ways they have gotten closer during lockdown.

Jost was a guest on the WTF with Marc Maron podcast on July 13 to discuss his book about working on SNL, A Very Punchable Face. Maron asked about the status of his relationship with Johansson and Jost shared one way in which the same thing that required them to postpone their wedding has brought them closer.

If Jost and Johansson had their way, they’d be married by now. Unfortunately, the shutdowns due to coronavirus forced them to postpone their wedding plans.

“I don’t know when,” Jost told Maron. ‘We were supposed to but now we don’t know when we really can. It’s a very evolving thing but I don’t know. Truly, I don’t know when.”

Both Jost and Johansson don’t want to put their vulnerable family members at risk, so they are waiting.

“We have at risk people in our families,” Jost said. “Who knows when we really want to get people together for a large gathering?”

Jost acknowledged that they did have to cancel a few reservations. Hopefully the venure refunded their deposit due to unforeseen circumstances.

“There were some cancelled things,” Jost muttered.

The pandemic has brought Scarlett Johansson and Colin Jost closer in this way

Under normal circumstances, Johansson and Jost may be married, but they would also be busy working. Johansson would be off making movies while Jost was at work in New York on SNL. The forced lockdown has allowed them to spend more time together, and particularly for Jost and Johansson’s daughter to spend time together.

“The one nice part about being holed up is we in some ways are more into a married life than we would have otherwise been,” Jost said. “Her daughter Rose and I have spent tons of time together. That’s great. That’s a thing you never can get. That’s something I think you have to appreciate. That’s cool. That part’s good.”

Colin Jost still worries about the world

Jost appreciates having more time with Johansson and Rose. There’s no denying the anxiety caused by the uncertainty of coronavirus. Hollywood has some guidelines for resuming production, but neither Jost nor Johansson know when they can work again, or even if they would want to.

“Of course, it’s a crippling anxiety about not knowing when work will happen or what kind of work can happen on every level,” Jost said. “It’s really fundamental things you think will generally be okay are not okay.”
