When Black Widow star Scarlett Johansson and “Weekend Update” host Colin Jost got engaged, fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Saturday Night Live came together for one unexpected crossover — the wait for wedding news. The couple confirmed their engagement in mid-2019. But after a year, fans are still wondering when Johansson and Jost will get married. Then recently, the SNL cast member hinted his wedding plans with Johansson have been put on hold.

Although Johansson and Jost started dating in 2017, the couple met on the set of SNL in January 2006.

“The first time she hosted was the first year I was a writer on the show,” Jost told Entertainment Tonight. “So, we’ve kind of known each other since then. She’s the best.”

Then after Johansson divorced actor Ryan Reynolds in 2010 and French journalist Romain Dauriac in 2017, the Avengers: Endgame star got together with Jost. Johansson and Jost were engaged two years later and unveiled the news to the public in May 2019.

Scarlett Johansson on Colin Jost’s proposal

When Johansson stopped by The Ellen DeGeneres Show in October 2019, the Marvel Cinematic Universe actor opened up about Jost’s proposal. She confirmed the SNL star “killed it” with a spectacular 11-carat egg-shaped diamond worth somewhere between $200,000 and $450,000, per Elle

“He did a whole James Bond situation. It was very surprising,” Johansson said of the proposal. “He’s got a lot behind that [‘Weekend Update’] desk he’s hiding. He’s very charming and very thoughtful and romantic. But yeah, I was surprised.”

She added, “Even if you kind of imagine what that moment’s gonna be like, it’s still a beautiful moment.”

That said, Johansson didn’t give away all the details of Jost’s proposal, noting it was a “very personal” and “special” moment.

“I think, more than anything, when someone tells you they want to spend their life with you, that’s a lovely, special thing,” she said.

Scarlett Johansson and Colin Jost may not get married for some time

Now, it seems Johansson and Jost may maintain the same level of secrecy for their wedding as they did for their proposal. When Johansson was on The Ellen Show in October, the actor did not reveal a wedding date.

“I have to clear my schedule first,” she teased.

Nevertheless, it doesn’t look like Johansson and Jost will get married anytime soon due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. On July 20, Jost revealed they’ve been rethinking their wedding plans during an interview with SiriusXM’s Andy Cohen Live

“We don’t even know what’s even legally allowed,” Jost said. “This is not the time to get all your elderly, at-risk relatives together in one big group. And we don’t know when that moment will be. Who knows? We don’t know whether we could do a live show for SNL yet, let alone have a wedding where the audience is elders.”

Then when speaking on the WTF with Marc Maron podcast, Jost noted the couple had to cancel a few things for the wedding. But even so, it seems Jost and Johansson are still head over heels for each other, whether or not fans hear about the pair’s romance in the press. In an interview with People from July 2020, Jost said:

You always hear things like marriage or relationships are hard. But they don’t have to be all the time. The goal should be that your lives are better together rather than more difficult. I think the people that are unhappy are just more vocal about it. The people that are happy are kind of like, “We don’t need to tell everyone we’re happy. We’re just going to be happy.”
