Scarlett Johansson is one of the biggest names in the world. The Avengers star is a world-renowned beauty, multiple-time Oscar nominee, and massive box office draw. However, just because Johansson is one of the world’s biggest stars, it doesn’t mean she’s always tuned in. The actor has famously shied away from social media despite its growing stature and shows no signs of changing this any time soon.

Who is Scarlett Johansson?

Johansson has been acting for most of her life. According to IMDb, she began smaller films like the cult hit Ghost World and Home Alone 3. However, after appearing in Sofia Coppola’s Lost in Translation aside Bill Murray, Johansson’s career immediately took off in ways that she had never seen before. Now, she was officially on the A-List.

Since her breakout, Johansson has shown her range in more ways than one. From voicework in The Jungle Book to the rare double Oscar Nomination in 2020 thanks to Marriage Story and Jojo Rabbit, Johansson’s one of the world’s most successful actors. Despite all of the Oscar nominations and massive critical hits, her most lucrative performances are still with the MCU.

Since Iron Man 2 premiered in 2010, Johansson’s Black Widow has been a staple of the ever-growing universe. Despite this commitment to a franchise that keeps almost everyone around, her solo debut, Black Widow, was one of the first business casualties of the pandemic and remains shelved to this day with hopes of a release shortly. However, despite her fame, don’t expect to see Johansson open up on Instagram, Twitter, or TikTok any time soon.

Scarlett Johansson opens up

Speaking with Arianna Huffington in Interview Magazine early on in her A-List tenure, Johansson saw the rise of social media and immediately knew that it was something she didn’t want to do. Johansson found the artifice of social media as a pointless way to keep up with mundane tasks, as well as an avenue to overshare one’s most private moments.

“I don’t have a Facebook or a Twitter account,” she told Huffington. “That, to me, is a very strange phenomenon. I can’t think of anything I’d rather do less than have to continuously share details of my everyday life.”

It’s been over a decade since Johansson made this claim. Since then, her star has gotten even brighter after several acclaimed roles that defy genre. Despite the world growing increasingly dependent on social media, however, Johansson remains content to stay as offline as humanly possible.

Has she changed course?

Johansson went on the popular wing-based talk show from First We Feast The Hot Ones and spoke about her online presence. While she still stays offline for personal use, she acknowledged that she sometimes looks at the latest memes and trending topics. “Memes and stuff like that take a long time to get to me,” she said after acknowledging that she still stands by her statements in the Huffington interview. “Sometimes, The Avengers clues me in.

Host Sean Evans asked the actor if she knew about the famous “biggest crossover event” meme that arose from Marvel’s claims about the then-upcoming event movies. Johansson shows that while she stays off social media, she does know the cultural references behind memes such as this.

As one of the hardest-working actors in Hollywood, it makes sense that Johansson doesn’t spend her time providing social media discourse. She’s too busy making movies. While her private life was scrutinized in the media early on, she leads a relatively low-profile existence compared to his global fame. For some, a lack of social media presence could be the difference between success and failure. When you’re an Academy Award-nominated actor, however, it’s easier just to tune out.
