It’s been a decade since Scream 4 released in theaters, but fans of the horror movie franchise have a new reason to be excited. Scream 5 hits theaters in 2022, and the sequel will bring back everything viewers loved about classic slasher films — including several members of the original cast. Who exactly is returning, and what role will they play in the upcoming sequel?

‘Scream’ came out 25 years ago

It’s hard to believe, but the first Scream movie debuted 25 years ago, arriving in theaters on Dec. 19, 1996. Wes Craven’s slasher quickly became a hit, leading to several sequels. However, the second installment was the only to rival the first in terms of box office success.

Scream‘s villain also joined the likes of Michael Myers and Jason Vorhees, becoming one of the most prominent faces of the horror genre. To this day, trick-or-treaters wear the Ghostface garb on Halloween — and that’s likely to continue now that Scream 5 is coming out.

Scream 5 will be the first film in the series that isn’t directed by Craven, who passed away in 2015. That might be why it’s being promoted as a soft reboot despite being a sequel to Scream 4. And although Scream 5 won’t have Craven in the director’s seat, it will bring back the original cast — well, the ones whose characters survived the first four movies anyway.

Multiple original cast members are returning for ‘Scream 5’

It’s hard to imagine a Scream movie without Neve Campbell, and fortunately, fans of the franchise don’t have to. Campbell is reprising her role as final girl Sydney Prescott for Scream 5, and she’s not the only original cast member to do so. David Arquette also returns as Dewey Riley, and Courteney Cox is making a comeback as Gale Weathers-Riley.

In addition to the iconic trio, Roger L. Jackson is returning to voice Ghostface. Not only will this help keep his identity under wraps, but it will ensure the character remains as fans remember.

These actors have been involved with every Scream movie to date, and it just wouldn’t feel like part of the franchise without them. Judging by Paramount Pictures’ recently released trailer, the OG survivors won’t be the single focus of the upcoming sequel. A new group of teens will be targeted by Ghostface, but they’re connected to the first victims. And after a call from Dewey, Sydney finds herself wrapped up in another massacre.

ScreenRant also reports that Marley Shelton will return as officer Judy Hicks. Not quite an original cast member, Shelton first showed up in Scream 4. She’s one of the more unexpected cast members to reprise her role in Scream 5. However, her job will likely land her in the investigation somehow.

With the original cast reprising their roles for Scream 5, it’s no wonder fans are so excited about the new film. It’s been 10 years since viewers last saw their characters, and the sequel is generating nearly as much excitement as the original film did in the ’90s.

Fortunately, fans won’t have to wait too long to see how the newest addition to the slasher series unfolds. Scream 5 recently received a release date, and it’s not so far away. Although Ghostface won’t arrive on the big screen in time for Halloween, the horror icon will kick off 2022 with a bang. Scream 5 hits theaters on Jan. 14, 2022.
