Ahead of the release of her new album Look At Her Now Selena Gomez opened the American Music Awards with a performance of “Lose You to Love Me” and “Look at Her Now.” Both of the songs are vulnerable, candid and inspired by Gomez’s tumultuous relationship with her ex-boyfriend, Justin Bieber.

After taking a break from performing and putting out new music while battling lupus and getting a kidney transplant — Gomez is back in the spotlight in a major way. In addition to her new music, she has been posting regularly on Instagram and giving detailed interviews about the current goings-on in her life.

Therefore, when news swirled that Gomez would open the AMAs, fans were thrilled. Unfortunately, things didn’t go according to plan.

Selena Gomez AMAs performance was “off-key”

No one is perfect, but fans were taken aback after listening to Gomez performing “Lose You to Love Me” and “Look at Her Now” when she opened the 2019 American Music Awards. Ahead of her appearance, Gomez hyped up her fans. “Feels good to be back,” she wrote on Instagram. “Thank you to my entire team and to my fans that stand by me. All of this is for you and because of you. excited for this chapter.”

Unfortunately, Gomez’s vocals weren’t as on point as people would have hoped. In fact, she was very off-key. On Twitter, one person said, “Am i the only one not impressed with Selena Gomez? For a show opener, that was a really off key and overall weak performance. #AMAs” Another added, “…so now im really starting to believe the rumors that julia michaels ghostsings for selena gomez cause… #AMAs”

Fans believe that Selena Gomez suffered a panic attack before hitting the AMAs page

Despite the fumbles on stage with her pitch — many fans are still praising Gomez for her return. One fan clapped back a the haters saying, “Everyone in the comments hating… try to stand on the stage after 2 years absolutely not performing and opening one of the biggest American award show. It wasn’t the best but she was great.”

Another fan claims that Gomez was so nervous that she suffered a panic attack prior to hitting the stage. They tweeted,

so you guys i work at the organization of the amas and we just got news about selena gomez having a panic attack before going on stage.her doctor told her she shouldn’t go but she did anyway.i don’t know a stronger woman! ill try take a selfie if she don’t go to rehab!!! #AMAs2019

We’re not sure how true the panic attack story is, but it does take a ton of courage to perform in front of the world.

Selena Gomez’s close friends supported her performance

With the nerves and possible panic attack — Gomez was still able to get through her performance, mostly because of the support of her close friends. Gomez’s bestie — Taylor Swift along with Halsey stood in the front row cheering her on.

It’s true that Gomez’s AMAs performance was not her best, but she ‘s just getting back into the rhythm of performing music. We hope that this slight setback doesn’t stop her flow.
