Is Selena Gomez’s ‘Only Murders in the Building’ Coming to Disney+?
Actor Selena Gomez returns to TV with her upcoming series Only Murders in the Building. Most often recognized for her music or her time as a Disney Channel star, she returns to familiar territory with this project — well, sort of. Can fans watch Gomez in Only Murders in the Building on Disney+?
Selena Gomez started as a Disney Channel star
Gomez is famous for her music, as well as film and TV projects. But though she’s worked with various studios over the years, she remains best known as a Disney Channel star. That’s because she rose to prominence on the network, starring in the sitcom Wizards of Waverly Place for four seasons.
Since the series ended, Gomez focused on movies like the Hotel Transylvania franchise and the Woody Allen romantic comedy A Rainy Day in New York. She’s also released a few post-Disney albums, including her 2021 Spanish-language EP Revelación, as well as a makeup line, Rare Beauty.
She returns to TV with ‘Only Murders in the Building’
Following many years away from scripted TV, Gomez announced her return to the small-screen in an intriguing new role. She portrays Mabel in Only Murders in the Building, a true-crime comedy from Steve Martin. He and Gomez star alongside Martin Short, Amy Ryan, and newcomer Aaron Dominguez.
Martin was on board with the casting right away. “There was no question except ‘Can we get her?’ We knew she would enhance the show in so many ways, the number one being talent,” he told Vogue in 2021. “Her performance is rich and adult,” Martin added. “She’s nicely, intensely low-key.”
Filming wrapped in April 2021
Despite the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, filming for Only Murders in the Building began in December 2020 in New York City. Gomez quickly became a popular subject for photographers in the area, who captured her on set with her co-star, Dominguez, sparking dating rumors.
Still, the actor has positive things to say about the experience. “I can barely get through a tape because they’re making me laugh the entire time,” she told the Los Angeles Times of Martin and Short. The former concurred. “Marty and I joke around constantly, and we weren’t sure if she’d be game for it. But now we think of ourselves as the Three Musketeers,” he told Vogue.
Where can fans watch ‘Only Murders in the Building’?
Only Murders in the Building comes from 20th Television, the studio formerly known as 20th Century Fox before Disney acquired it in 2019. In the U.S., it will air on Hulu, the streaming service where most of Disney’s titles associated with the former Fox brand live.
However, Hulu is currently a U.S.-only platform. However, in 2021, Disney launched a new international service, Star, in areas such as Australia, Canada, the U.K., and many more. Through this deal, Only Murders in the Building will be available to international audiences when it debuts later in the year.
