In the past year, Selena Gomez has been more active and visible on social media than she’s been in years. The “Lose You To Love Me” songstress took a long hiatus on the social media platform after her battle with lupus and a life-saving organ transplant.

However, since the summer of 2019 — Gomez has been active on Instagram giving her fans a glimpse into her personal life that included everything from summer concerts, Disney World trips, and her birthday celebration in Italy.

Gomez has gotten back to music as well with new singles and her performance at the American Music Awards. However, the singer/actress just explained why she will be deleting her Instagram soon.

Selena Gomez used to be addicted to Instagram

With 165 million followers on Instagram, Gomez has one of the largest followings on the entire platform. That can cause a great deal of anxiety, especially when you’re being pitted against other stars and your past relationships and entanglements are constantly being thrown in your face. Still, there was a time when the singer was addicted to IG.

“As soon as I became the most followed person on Instagram, I sort of freaked out,” Gomez explained to Vogue in 2017. “It had become so consuming to me. It’s what I woke up to and went to sleep to it. I was an addict, and it felt like I was seeing things I didn’t want to see, like it was putting things in my head that I didn’t want to care about. I always end up feeling like sh*t when I look at Instagram. Which is why I’m kind of under the radar, ghosting it a bit.”

Selena Gomez limits her time on social media

In order to protect her mental health and well-being while focusing on her real life and things that actually matter, Gomez has limited her time on Instagram.

She told Dream It Real podcast, “It is not that healthy to be on it all the time because I noticed with me, I got kind of depressed looking at these people who look beautiful and amazing, and it would just get me down a lot so I just think taking breaks is really important.”

For now, the “Look At Her Now” singer is only using the platform to promote her forthcoming album, Rare.

Selena Gomez is quitting Instagram once her album is released

Gomez is only on Instagram until her album, Rare drops on Jan . 10 — after that, she’s vanishing once more. “I got back on [Instagram] because I was releasing music, but I just told my best friend yesterday, I’m going to have to take it off my phone again soon,” she explained to The Wall Street Journal. “They know I have an addictive personality, and it can be unhealthy.”

In addition to having her close group of girlfriends who don’t have anything to do with Hollywood, we can see why logging off might be the best thing for Gomez’s mental health. The last time she walked away from Instagram, she deleted the app from her phone and only her assistant had the password.

We could all probably use a little less screen time.
