Sex and the City was one of those most iconic shows to air in the early 2000s. Naturally, Rumors have swirled about the series and everything that went on behind the scenes. One of the most believed stories from the set of the show is that Sarah Jessica Parker’s son, James Wilkie Broderick, portrayed Aidan Shaw’s son in season 6. Parker set the record straight on Instagram.

Sarah Jessica Parker insisted the baby that played Tate was not her son

While fans have long believed that Aidan’s baby was played by Parker’s real-life child, she took to Instagram to set the record straight. Parker responded to a fan question in May 2020 and revealed that James did not play baby Tate, and, in fact, never appeared on Sex and the City. James Wilkie, who turns 18 in October, does not have any acting credits to his name.

There is only one child who appeared regularly in the series, and the identity of that actor is known. The recurring role went to Joseph Pupo, who played Brady Hobbes. Pupo reprised his role in 2008 and 2010 In Sex and the City: The Movie and Sex and the City 2.

How did the rumor get started?

The rumor that Parker’s son, James, played the role of Tate is so ingrained that it’s pretty hard to figure out where it first started. The origins appear to be lost in time, but it’s understandable why people would assume Parker’s own son might have played the role. Season 5 of Sex and the City was cut short to accommodate Parker’s real-life pregnancy.

Parker’s first child was born in October 2002. Season 6 of the series began in June 2003, meaning James was about nine months old when the episode aired. The baby that Aidan was seen holding looked to be about six months old, so the ages match up. Fans were also quick to note that the baby had an awfully sweet reaction when seeing Parker’s character, Carrie Bradshaw. Reddit fans note that the baby that played Tate appeared to recognize Parker. If he did, it wasn’t because she was his mother, though.

Who actually played Aidan’s son, Tate?

Unfortunately, there is no information on the baby actor who portrayed Tate. The role is not listed in IMDb, and its entirely possible that the baby belonged to a crew member, as is sometimes the case for brief scenes like the one in Sex and the City. All told, Tate only appeared in the episode for two minutes.

If a well-known child actor played Tate, they have yet to claim the role, and probably never will. The true identity of Aidan’s son will likely remain a mystery.  One thing is for sure; Tate was not portrayed by Parker’s son or the child of any other well-known characters.
