Though he’s most revered for his roles as Derek Morgan on the long-running Criminal Minds and more recently on S.W.A.T. as Stg. Hondo Harrelson, Shemar Moore’s work in Hollywood stretches back three decades.

While the ever-personable actor has a warm connection with his fans, he’s kept much of his personal life under wraps. In the ’90s he was linked to actress Halle Berry, and singer Toni Braxton. More recently he’s dated soccer player Shawna Gordon and Quantico actress Anabelle Acosta.

Still, much of Moore’s focus has been on his work in Hollywood and his charity ventures supporting multiple sclerosis research. In fact, most fans would be shocked to learn just how much the 50-year-old actor is worth today.

Inside Shemar Moore’s Hollywood career

Born in Oakland and raised in both Demark and California, Moore got his big break in the industry while he was in college. While in school he began modeling to pay his bills, which eventually paralleled into a role on The Young and the Restless from 1994 to 2005.

During his years on the soap opera, Moore hosted Soul Train, appeared in movies like The Brothers and Diary of A Mad Black Woman as well as countless guest-starring roles. His 12-year stint propelled him into a new level of fame, grabbing those who’d rocked with him for decades as well as a new generation of fans. From there Moore’s career skyrocketed.

This is why Shemar Moore left ‘Criminal Minds’ abruptly

On Criminal Minds, Moore started as the charismatic Derek Morgan who was known for his special bond with his co-worker  Penelope Garcia (Kirsten Vangsness). Moore remained on the show from Season 1 -Season 11 before abruptly leaving.

At the time, Moore said that he felt he’d done everything he could do with Morgan, though he did return as a guest star sparingly in Seasons 12 and 13. “I’m not leaving to go be a big star. I’m not leaving to go make a bunch of money. … I’m leaving because I just creatively want to be fueled and [am] excited to try new things and see what else I’m capable of.” he told TV Guide at the time.

Moore also revealed that he wanted to slow down a bit and have a personal life. “I want to get married, I want to have kids, I want to travel,” he explained.

Just after Moore’s exit, his former co-worker, Thomas Gibson was fired from the series following a physical altercation on set. Moore subtly called Gibson out in a now-deleted video saying,

Lot of birdies chirping out there; the gossip is real. I’ll just say this: I believe in karma. Good things happen to good people. Honest people. Hard-working people. Humble people. People who believe in basic goodness. … Treat people how you expect them to treat you. Celebrate yourself and celebrate your blessings — as you should — but just know that you’re not better than anybody.
