Sheryl Crow Shared the Trait That Made Her ‘Frustrated’ With Stevie Nicks

Stevie Nicks and Sheryl Crow rose to prominence years apart, but they forged a valuable friendship. Nicks describes her friendship with the younger singer as one of her most treasured. They’ve performed together numerous times, and Nicks even considered bringing Crow in as a member of Fleetwood Mac. While they both cherish their relationship, one thing Nicks commonly does drives Crow to frustration.

Stevie Nicks and Sheryl Crow are good friends

Nicks and Crow first met at a Grammy’s afterparty in 1996.

“Stevie had just recorded ‘Somebody Stand by Me,’ a song of mine,” Crow said, per the book Gold Dust Woman: The Biography of Stevie Nicks by Stephen Davis. “I liked her immediately, and she said, ‘We should get together and work some time.’ I thought, Great! But then I didn’t hear from her — for two years.”

In 1998, Nicks and Crow began working together, writing and producing music for Nicks’ solo album Trouble in Shangri-La. Through their collaboration, the two women became close friends. Per a 2022 profile of Crow in The New York Times, Nicks said their relationship is “one of my most treasured friendships of my whole life.”

Sheryl Crow shared the way that Stevie Nicks frustrates her

Crow explained that she looks up to Nicks both for her talent and devotion to her craft.

“Stevie says that her songs are her children; that they go out and work on her behalf. And they do, because they are very healing for people,” Crow told The Independent in 2002, per The Nicks Fix. “I’ve yet to make that peace with my work because it doesn’t have that depth. But if I ever wrote something as good as ‘Landslide,’ say, I’d just get in my car, drive to Tennessee and have kids. I’d feel completely sated.”

Though she looks up to the Fleetwood Mac singer, Crow revealed that some of her behavior is frustrating. Mainly, she wishes Nicks was kinder to herself. 

“Stevie should tell herself the wonderful things that she tells me — she’s way too tough on herself,” she said. “It’s hard to be in the public eye, and getting older isn’t easier for any of us gals. Stevie’s still gorgeous, though, and I get frustrated with her because she doesn’t realize it.”

The Fleetwood Mac singer often offers advice to her friend

Nicks explained that she tried to share some of her expertise from years as a musician with Crow. Her main piece of advice centered around romantic relationships.

“Don’t get interested in somebody who’s going to go back on the road,” she told ABC News. “Men are going to go out on the road and they’re going to find other women. So if you really want to save yourself a whole lot of heartache, do not fall in love with somebody in a band. Just don’t. Because it just doesn’t ever work. It’s too much to ask of them to be true … In my book, it’s a rule.”

Nicks, who is happily single, believes dating a fellow musician is a mistake. 

“It’s just an invitation to heartache,” she said. “If you want to find somebody and you want to be married and you want to have children, don’t make it a rock star.”
