‘Shining Girls’ Season 1 Episode 5 recap: Kirby learns more about her attacker and the man he visits

The story’s out in “Screamer,” which began streaming on May 13, 2022, according to Apple TV+. It’s the day after Kirby’s attacker, played by Jamie Bell, confronted her a the laundromat-turned-bar. One day after Kirby, formerly Sharon, had her reality shift. Now she’s helping the police put together a composite sketch of the guy and going back to work.

Kirby’s co-worker, Dan (Wagner Moura), recognizes the man in the sketch as the one he spoke with outside of Julia Madrigal’s (Karen Rodriguez) house. Later, the reporter and Kirby go to Julia’s work.

Once again, someone recognizes the man’s face. That’s how they end up speaking to Leo Jenkins (Christopher Denham), a man with early-onset Alzheimer’s. He’s a ward of the state who spends his days in a green-hued room with only one photograph on the wall.

Leo knows Kirby’s attacker. The man frequently visits him and, in this episode, they talk in hushed tones about a house and why things change. Does she know the reason for it? Is she the one doing it?

Ultimately, Kirby and Dan leave Julia’s work with a videotape Leo gave them. On it, Kirby’s attacker can be heard talking to a woman as she poses in front of the camera.

Jin-Sook has a visitor at the planetarium

The mystery of Jin-Sook, as played by Dopesick’s Phillipa Soo, and her keys continue. The Adler Planetarium employee who, like Kirby, has survived an attack, does some research on her keys.

She discovers someone’s been using her old key to follow her. They’re entering and exiting the Adler Planetarium shortly after she does. Then, as previously seen in the April 29 premiere episode, she finds a bee with no wings on her desk. And once again she gets stuck on the roof when the door mysteriously closes.

Except for this time Kirby’s attacker is there. He wants Jin-Sook to get a message to Kirby, whom he calls Sharon. “When I feel something she knows,” he tells Jin-Sook when she asks what he wants her to tell him.

It’s still not exactly clear how the victims are connected

Dan and Kirby have already figured out where the items inside the victims are coming from. However, they’re still unsure how all the women are connected. Do they know each other somehow? Are they chosen at random? Jin-Sook supplies Kirby with a scientific explanation but they still don’t have an answer.

Also important to note, the last scene includes Kirby’s reality once again shifting. This time it’s Dan’s car. He’s driving a different car.

A new episode of Shining Girls drops every Friday on Apple TV+.
