Even before her husband, Bill Clinton took the White House in 1993, SNL tackled Secretary Clinton’s persona with some of the early impressions done by comedian Jan Hooks. Hooks was the first SNL cast member to embody Clinton and she lists portraying Clinton as being one of her favorites of all time.

Clinton’s staying power ultimately produced nine different actors taking on her persona on SNL, with even a few guest performances by actress Drew Barrymore and musician Miley Cyrus who did a rap on her behalf. When Clinton appeared on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, she revealed which SNL impression she loved the most.

Clinton is with Kate McKinnon

A WWHL After Show caller wanted to know who did the best job portraying Clinton on SNL. Clinton lit up at the question as Cohen remarked how she had a slew of actors portraying her on the sketch comedy show. “Obviously I thought they all did a really good job,” Clinton pondered. “But probably Kate McKinnon. And Amy … Amy Poehler were the ones who I thought really captured it.”

She also discussed her own appearance on SNL. “And when I went on SNL, I was so surprised that they could literally take an outfit you were wearing 24 hours before and make it!” she exclaimed. “And so that the person playing you would be wearing it.”

Clinton said the costumes were incredibly spot on.”So I did a little bit of a double-take! Like, was that me or was that somebody else?”

Did Clinton watch ‘SNL’ when she was in the White House?

Cohen followed up the question by asking if Clinton watched SNL when she lived in the White House. “Did you watch? I mean on a Saturday night, and you’re at Camp David with Bill would you turn on SNL?” Cohen pondered.

Clinton said, “Not every time because there was lots of other stuff going on. But yeah! From time to time absolutely.” Cohen then wonders how Clinton didn’t take it personally or get upset about the parodies.

But Clinton said she found the humor in the sketches. “I think it’s funny,” she responded. “And again, it goes back to when somebody is making fun of you, what can you learn from that? So I like watching it.”

She discussed McKinnon shortly after the election

Clinton appeared on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon shortly after the 2016 election. Fallon asked if Clinton saw McKinnon’s rendition of “Hallelujah” during the cold open. “That was a tear-jerker,” Clinton remarked.

She wrote about viewing the moment in her book adding, “I didn’t have any idea what to expect and when Kate McKinnon, who is actually a better me than I am, I wish I had her talent. She sat there playing ‘Hallelujah.’ That was hard. That was really hard. And then, the other skit that she did, showing some of my warnings, like ‘ be careful what he will do’ [and] ‘he will kill us all.’ That was not as funny but it was also very touching.”
