Social Media Users Are Blasting ‘Moesha’ As a ‘Problematic’ Character
Thanks to streaming on Netflix, Moesha is a trending topic. The show is causing much nostalgia from longtime fans. Along with the enjoyment, the popular 90s sitcom has older fans looking at the subject matter through a different lens.
Brandy stars as the lead character, which many fans relate to. But Moesha is now getting called out for behavior fans now find problematic. Social media users are going as far as writing think pieces with 280 characters on Twitter about Moesha’s flaws.
Fans blast Moesha character as problematic, judgemental, and a bad friend
While Moesha represents what it means to be a Black teenage girl in America for millions of fans, it doesn’t mean she’s without fault. As the center of her friendship circle, she often finds herself in sticky situations by inserting herself into other’s problems.
She also is not as supportive as she can be to her friends. In an episode in season 1, her best friend Kim pleads with her to audition alongside her for the cheerleading team. Feeling she’s above the high school cliche, she participates in Kim’s journey but doesn’t believe Kim will be selected.
When Kim is picked for the team and not her, Moesha isolates herself after feeling slighted. She’s not used to not being the popular one and has trouble adapting to Kim in the spotlight. She also refuses to support Kim by attending games or trying to fit into Kim’s new social circle.
“Moesha really turned into a bad friend because Kim made the cheerleading squad,” one Twitter user writes.
“I know Moesha was not mad at Kim for making the cheer team. Girl, bye. That’s not a friend. Kim should have dropped her like a bad habit,” another says.
There are also a few episodes where Moesha and others joke about Kim’s weight, which viewers take issue with.
“And Moesha a bad friend always making fun of Kim weight,” another writes.
Moesha’s friendship with Hakeem is also under scrutiny. She often interjects into Hakeem’s love life and points out his lack of academic intelligence and common sense.
“Yall just now realizing Moesha was a bad friend in 2020? She always spoke on Kim’s weight and questioned Hakeem’s intelligence and always reverted the attention back to her.. Sis was a narcissist,” a Twiter user points out.
There are talks of a ‘Moesha’ reboot
With all of the revived interest in the show, Brandy recently admitted that she’s in talks to bring the show back. Fans remember the series never had a proper ending, with season 6 leaving viewers with a cliffhanger.
In a recent interview with Rap Up, Brandy says, “I’m completely open to it. I would love to experience that. I just want for everyone to know that I’m open to it and I’m in discussions with the right people to make it happen.”
It’s been 19 years since the show went off the air but fans want more. It’ll also be interesting to see who reprises their roles. Three major characters on the series are no longer alive, but with the right writing, fans are hoping their memory is honored.
