Meghan, Duchess of Sussex and Prince Harry announced earlier this year that they would step down from being senior members of the royal family. The couple subsequently moved to Los Angeles with their son and began setting up a more private life away from the confines of the royal establishment.

According to an upcoming tell-all book about Meghan and Harry, the pair reportedly had many complaints about royal life. One of which was that they felt they constantly had to “take a backseat” to Prince William and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge. However, some fans believe Meghan and Harry were simply asking for too much from the royal family.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry reportedly felt they had to ‘take a backseat’ to Prince William and Kate Middleton

As told in Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand’s new book, Finding Freedom: Harry, Meghan and the Making of a Modern Royal Family, Meghan and Harry’s tension with William and Kate was a major decision in their decision to step down.

Vanity Fair wrote, “The in-fighting, which led to arguably the greatest crisis the royals have faced since the death of Princess Diana, is laid bare in the book, which reveals how the Sussexes’ were jealous of the Cambridges’ autonomy and felt William and Kate were always given priority over them.”

The book noted Harry and Meghan felt “they were a major draw for the royal family,” but their work “had to take a backseat” to what William and Kate wanted to do.

“Sometimes they would be told that their projects had to wait when the Prince of Wales or Prince William had an initiative or tour being announced at the same time,” Scobie and Durand shared.

The ill feelings between the two couples eventually led to William and Kate allegedly “snubbing” Harry and Meghan during the latter two’s final engagement as royals.

The book aims to tell Meghan and Harry’s side of the story, but some fans believe these allegations only make Meghan and Harry look worse from the public’s point of view.

A number of social media users have expressed that Meghan and Harry’s expectations to be treated the same way as William and Kate do not make sense given where each couple is in the succession line.

“Did they need monarchy explained to them?” one person wrote on Twitter. “William is the future Prince of Wales and after that, King. Kate is the future Princess of Wales, and after that, Queen. EVERYONE in the royal family SHOULD feel second to that, because they ARE.”

Meanwhile, another Twitter user added, “[Harry and Meghan] seem to have been surprised that the future King & Queen would have more autonomy and a higher profile than the brother & in law of said future King & Queen.”

Aside from delving into the conflict between the Sussexes and the Cambridges, Finding Freedom also features interviews with people close to Meghan and Harry to get an in-depth look at their life. However, the book has not been endorsed by the pair themselves.

As reported by The Times, Markle reportedly told friends she “gave up my entirely life for this family.”

According to the book’s synopsis, Finding Freedom also “goes beyond the headlines to reveal unknown details of Harry and Meghan’s life together, dispelling the many rumors and misconceptions that plague the couple on both sides of the pond.”
