Over the years the award-winning television series Grey’s Anatomy has grown an insanely large fan base. The popular show is known for its drama, romance, and of course, the many medical issues the doctors encounter. When it comes to mental illnesses Grey’s Anatomy  has had their fair share of experiences.

However, take a look at the storyline that is surprisingly bringing a lot of negative attention to the show.

Grey’s Anatomy is no stranger when it comes to mental illnesses and the stigmas that come with them. Over the past 16 years, the hit drama series has tackled numerous mental health issues through the characters’ stories and scenes.

This has allowed Grey’s Anatomy to give a more accurate portrayal of reality as well as begin to crush the harmful stigmas that are all too often associated with mental illnesses.

It didn’t take long for the audience to pick up on the struggles Owen Hunt faced when his character was first introduced on the show. He was serving time in the army and returned traumatized.

Owen is forced to come to the realization that he has developed post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This became glaringly evident in the scene the portrays he waking up from a nightmare to only realize he was unknowingly strangling Cristina.

Fans and viewers of the show watched as Owen came to terms with his mental health issues and navigated his symptoms.

Later down the line, the audience would meet Owen’s sister, whose character gave a voice to the many different avenues and options available to those who struggle and face mental health issues. She encouraged Owen to seek therapy, knowing how much it could help him.

Grey’s Anatomy also does a phenomenal job of portraying the everyday struggles and battles that comes with addiction in today’s day and age through Richard Webber’s ongoing storyline.

Miranda Bailey is another character who played a vital role in bringing attention to mental illnesses. After being diagnosed with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), Grey’s Anatomy did an excellent job of authentically honoring the struggles that so many people suffer from.

This discussion is just one of the many outlets that demonstrate that fans of Grey’s Anatomy are upset over Andrew DeLuca’s storyline.

Instead of supporting the theory that DeLuca may have genetically inherited the bipolar disorder from his father, many fans are claiming that the show is just desperately trying to portray him as unstable.

Typically, Grey’s Anatomy is well-known for its reputation to accurately and successfully depict mental illnesses. However, many fans are beginning to wonder if this could simply be a sign of poor writing on production’s end. Viewers are excited to see how this storyline continues.
