Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is nearing its April release date, and the video game movie promises plenty of hilarious pop culture references when it finally hits theaters. In the sequel’s latest teaser, Sonic (Ben Schwartz) channels his inner Batman — and truthfully, we’d watch a whole film of him as “Blue Justice.”

‘Sonic the Hedgehog 2’ teaser spoofs Batman

Paramount Pictures‘ latest teaser for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 plays on all the hype surrounding The Batman. The footage opens with Sonic looking down on a busy city, altering his voice so that it resembles Gotham’s caped crusader.

“I have been called many names,” Sonic says. “Vengeance. The Spiky Supernova.” Then he coughs — because imitating Batman isn’t easy — before settling on a different alias: Blue Justice.

Of course, Robert Pattinson’s take on the DC hero calls himself Vengeance. That line has come up in more than a few trailers, and it seems our favorite blue hedgehog has been listening.

The Sonic teaser also makes use of Batman’s aesthetic. While Sonic declares himself “Blue Justice,” he stands on the edge of a building with the moon behind him. That pose has come to be associated with the hero over the years. And throughout the trailer, “Bat-Signals” tease things like “the quills of justice” and “the first of rage.”

The sequel also references the Winter Soldier

Sonic’s spoof on Batman isn’t Sonic the Hedgehog 2‘s first superhero reference — and it probably won’t be the last. The movie’s Super Bowl 2022 trailer also poked fun at a beloved Marvel character. During a glimpse of a fight between Sonic and Knuckles (Idris Elba), Sonic calls his opponent the Winter Soldier.

The joke doesn’t go nearly as in-depth as Sonic’s play on Batman. However, the fact that Knuckles is pursuing Sonic down a snowy slope makes it work — as does the villain’s super strength, which resembles the effects of the Super Soldier Serum.

Knowing the Sonic franchise, fans will get more pop culture references when Sonic the Hedgehog 2 finally hits theaters. The first film included plenty of entertaining Easter Eggs, and its successor looks to be no different.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 promises hilarity and hijinks when it comes out — but what’s the release date for the sequel? Fans can catch up with Sonic and friends on April 8, 2022.

The movie will continue the character arcs introduced in the first installment, but it also promises to bring in more of the Sonic games. For one, fans will finally get to see Knuckles and Tails (Colleen O’Shaughnessey) on the big screen. Posters and trailers also suggest that Sonic 2 will bring in more of the source material’s lore — and with a third chapter already greenlit, that would make sense.
