The rumors surrounding Spider-Man 3 have heated up ever since Jamie Foxx revealed that he would reprise the role of Electro. In fact, so many stories have started to emerge about the project that Sony issued a statement attempting to squash one of the rumors.

The studio refuses to confirm that they’ve booked Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield to appear in the final act, which will reportedly introduce the live-action Spider-Verse. But, they didn’t flat out deny it, either. This leaves plenty of room for fan speculation about numerous Spideys and a number of villains. The latest inside info claims that Foxx’s Electro will lead the Sinister Six. Is there any truth to that rumor?

Fans haven’t seen Jamie Foxx’s Electro since ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’

Spider-Man fans are very familiar with the two most-recent attempts at building a franchise around the character. While Sam Raimi’s first two Spider-Man films with Maguire are considered by some to be the best superhero films ever made, the third installment fell flat.

Andrew Garfield’s version of the character couldn’t make it past two films, as Sony scrapped their plans for more movies after the disappointing The Amazing Spider-Man 2 in 2014. That movie was the last time fans saw Foxx’s Electro. This explains why his casting news in Spider-Man 3 was such a shock.

One day after The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that Foxx was in final talks to reprise the role, the actor confirmed the news on Instagram. Foxx posted a pic that featured three different Spideys.

“Super excited to be part of the new marvel Spider-Man new installment,” Foxx wrote in the caption. “And i won’t be blue in this one!! but a thousand percent badass!!!”

He later deleted the post, which caused many fans to think the studio didn’t approve of the actor breaking the news so soon.

Which Marvel characters are part of the Sinister Six?

As ComicsBeat points out, the return of Electro could mean that Marvel is planning to introduce an inter-dimensional Sinister Six. The first hint that this could be happening was the mid-credits scene in Spider-Man: Far From Home.

This is when J.K. Simmons – from Raimi’s Maguire-Verse – reprised his role of J. Jonah Jameson for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This caused fan speculation that timelines had been crossed, and the MCU was headed into the Spider-Verse.

The scene also fueled speculation that Maguire and Garfield are returning to join the current version of Spider-Man, Tom Holland.

As for the inter-dimensional Sinister Six, the original lineup in the comics included Electro, Vulture, and Mysterio. Of course, Marvel has already cast Michael Keaton as Vulture and Jake Gyllenhall as Mysterio.

The rest of the lineup included Sandman, Kraven the Hunter, and Doctor Octopus. Thomas Haden Church took on the role of Sandman in 2007’s Spider-Man 3. Alfred Molina played Doctor Octopus – AKA Doctor Otto Gunther Octavius – in 2004’s Spider-Man 2. Meanwhile, Kathryn Hahn voiced Doctor Olivia Octavius in 2018’s Into the Spider-Verse.

Could a ‘Spider-Man 3’ villain be hiding in ‘Wandavision’?

Marvel studio boss Kevin Feige has insisted that the new shows on Disney+ are part of the MCU. This means that what happens in the Marvel TV shows are canon, and the storylines could cross over to the big screen.

With that in mind, some fans are wondering if WandaVision and Spider-Man 3 are connected. The reason is that Hahn appeared in the trailer for WandaVision playing a mysterious role. And, her Doc Ock went missing at the end of Into the Spider-Verse after a fight near an inter-dimensional portal.

Many fans believe that Hahn could be the key to an inter-dimensional Sinister Six. They also see the casting news of Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange in Spider-Man 3 as another telling sign. The master of the mystical arts is reportedly the conduit who brings Maguire and Garfield’s Spideys into the MCU. He could end up doing the same for the Sinister Six.

Spider-Man 3 is scheduled to hit theaters on December 17, 2021.
