This year, Jake Gyllenhaal is nominated for a Tony for Best Actor for his role in ‘Sea Wall/A Life’. He is also up for an award for his role as producer on the same play, along with his company, Nine Stories. Gyllenhall, with his company, is also nominated for another producing award for ‘Slave Play”

Speaking to Variety about his role in ‘Sea Wall/A Life,’ which ran on Broadway during the summer of 2019, Gyllenhall said the following:

“Thinking about it makes me miss Broadway so intensely. It really became an example for me of why I make art, which is the interaction with an audience, particularly a live audience…It makes my heart ache for it.”

The play includes a pair of one-act monologues. It gives audiences a glimpse into the minds of two men, both professionals and fathers, as they examine their lives and the experiences they have had to cope with. Simon Stephens and Nick Payne wrote the play, which is nominated for a Tony Award for Best Play.

What is ‘Slave Play’ About?

Additionally, Gyllenhaal, along with his company Nine Stories, snagged a nomination a Tony Award for his role as producer on the stage show ‘Slave Play.’ The play began its Broadway run in Oct., 2019.

Written by Jeremy O. Harris, it’s a three-act play that explores race, sex, trauma, and power relations. It is also nominated for a Tony Award for Best Play.

In an interview with Variety, Harris said the following about how he hoped the play would perform at the Tony Awards:

“At the end of our very first press meeting for the Broadway production of ‘Slave Play,’ I said, ‘Hey, guys, because of the ways in which this play is having conversations about Black identity, Black self-actualization, the history of chattel slavery and what that does to our psyches, I think ‘Slave Play’ actually sits inside of a really important space in American culture, kind of like ‘Angels in America’ did, and I think we should try to get as many Tony nominations as ‘Angels in America.’”
