Like many 25-year-olds these days, Tom Holland is experiencing a pre-mid-life crisis. With Spider-Man: No Way Home closing out Holland’s web-slinging trilogy, the actor revealed he’s not sure what his future holds. The next five years or so might include more acting, but Holland could also consider stepping away from the big screen. Here’s what he said about his future in recent interviews.

Tom Holland says he’s having a ‘mid-life crisis’ as he contemplates his future

Although he’s most known for joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Spider-Man in his early twenties, Holland has acted since age 11. And after nearly 15 years in the business, the Cherry star isn’t sure he wants this path for the rest of his life. Holland told Sky News that he’s going through a “mid-life crisis” — or a “pre-mid-life crisis” — as he thinks about his next move.

“I started acting when I was 11, and I haven’t done anything else, so I’d like to go and do other things,” he said.

He elaborated a bit more in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. Holland explained that he’s not thinking about his career so much as his future in a broader sense. He might one day even pursue a carpentry business and become a father — the possibilities are endless. Holland said:

I want to spend the next five years really thinking about my future rather than thinking about my career. I’m very privileged and lucky to be where I am in my career, and it’s given me a lot of stability and stuff going forward. So I think the next five years is going to be about, “What do I want the future of my life to look like?” rather than, “What do I want the legacy of my career to look like?”

Tom Holland doesn’t necessarily want to play Spider-Man forever

Spider-Man: No Way Home producer Amy Pascal recently seemed to imply Holland was locked in for at least three more Spider-Man roles. However, Holland told The Hollywood Reporter that was “not accurate at all.”

“It’s just this open conversation and open dialogue between Mr. [Bob] Iger [Walt Disney Co. executive chairman] and Mr. [Tom] Rothman [chairman of Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group],” he clarified.

Pascal might love to see Holland play Spider-Man for several more years, but the actor doesn’t quite feel the same way. In the same interview, he suggested that No Way Home could very well be his Spider-Man stopping point.

“Maybe [Spider-Man: No Way Home] is the perfect storybook ending for this chapter of Spider-Man,” he added. “And if it’s time for me to step down and for the new person to step up, I would do so proudly.”

For now, at least, Holland’s acting days aren’t quite over. In early December, he revealed that Sony tapped him to play Fred Astaire in an upcoming biopic, though he didn’t know much about the project yet. Additionally, he’s slated to appear in Apple TV+’s anthology series, The Crowded Room.

Who knows? Holland might change his mind about acting and decide to do it forever, as he told GQ earlier in 2021.

“I might start shooting The Crowded Room and go, ‘You know what, this is what I’m going to do for the rest of my life.’ Or I might do Spider-Man 4, 5, and 6, finish when I’m 32, and never make another,” he said. “I’m not sure what I want to do.”
