Squid Game episode 3, “The Man With the Umbrella,” introduced non-Korean fans to the sweet treat called “Honeycomb” or dalgona candy. In the episode, Player 067 (Jung Ho-yeon) climbs into the vents to see the pink soldiers melting large vats of sugar. During the game, players choose one of the symbols. They don’t realize that these would be the shapes they will have to delicately pick out of the candy.

The players are then given a circular tin case containing dalagona candy with their chosen shape and a needle. They then had to gently remove the shape from the candy without it breaking or cracking. If the shape breaks, they are violently eliminated from the game.

For Squid Game fans looking to make dalgona at home, the recipe is fairly straightforward. Start by melting one tablespoon of sugar on low heat. Then, stir the melting sugar in a scoop before adding a pinch of baking soda.

Next, stir the mixture until it turns to a creamy, golden brown. You’ll then pour it onto a flat tray sprinkled with sugar. Flatten the mixture using a metal tool and stamp the candy with the shape of your choice. After it completely cools, remove it from the tray. The final step is to carefully remove the shape from the center of the candy.

The rise in dalgona candy popularity all over the world

Dalgona candy is a nostalgic Korean honeycomb sugar candy with a distinct nutty, bitter, and sweet taste. Vendors would set up their candy outside of schools, and kids would play the game. Kids would attempt to remove the shape from the brittle candy. If they’re successful, they would win another treat for free or even be rewarded with a small toy.
