Netflix has officially greenlit ‘Squid Game’ Season 2

Netflix officially announced Squid Game Season 2 on Sunday, June 13, after much speculation over whether there would be another season. “On your marks. Get set. Greenlight. Squid Game continues,” Netflix wrote in a statement shared on its Instagram page.

The first season of the show followed indebted gambler Seong Gi-hun as he joined 455 other contestants for the Squid Game challenge. He hoped to use the earnings from the game to resolve his debts and provide a better life for his young daughter, Seong Ga-yeong.

Ultimately, Gi-hun won the competition after beating out his friend, Cho Sang-Woo, in the final round. But the games had traumatized him so much that he still hadn’t spent any of the money a year later.

After connecting with an organizer of the game, he decided to use his earnings to help the families of some of the people who had died in the games. Gi-hun also booked a flight to see his daughter. But just as he was boarding the plane, he turned back, seemingly planning to investigate those behind the Squid Game.

Gi-hun and others to return in ‘Squid Game’ Season 2

In a separate Instagram post, Netflix confirmed Gi-hun would be back for Squid Game Season 2, in addition to several others including The Front Man. “The man in the suit with ddakji might be back. You’ll also [meet] Young-hee’s boyfriend, Cheol-su,” the statement continues.

While the exact plot is uncertain, show creator Hwang Dong-hyuk has had a “basic storyline” put together for months.

“I do have the basic storyline in my head,” Hwang told Entertainment Weekly in November 2021. “I am in the process currently of brainstorming the details… In the first season that we saw Gi-hun is a character whose humanity is shown through or exposed in certain situations. In other words, his humanity is shown through a very passive manner.”

“But I would think that in the second season, what he has learned from the games and his experience in the first season, they will all be put to use in a more active manner,” he added. “At the same time, as for the Front Man who was also a past winner but became a Front Man, it’s like Darth Vader. Some end up Jedi and some become Darth Vader, right? I think that maybe Gi-hun will go through a certain critical point where he is put through a test as well.”
