The Netflix series Squid Game is on the tip of everyone’s tongue these days. From Hwang Dong-hyuk, it’s a Korean survival drama focusing on individuals living in debt who receive invitations to participate in games they grew up playing for a chance to win big cash. Only, they have been redesigned and can be deadly.

Squid Game premiered in late September and exploded to become one of the biggest Netflix shows ever. Understandably, fans are hoping and wishing for another season. While a Squid Game Season 2 has not been confirmed, it looks like it has a good chance of getting another season.

‘Squid Game’ could be Netflix’s biggest show

Bridgerton, a period drama following the siblings of a wealthy family searching for mates during London’s Regency era, still holds the crown for the most-watched show on Netflix. But maybe not for long. As more and more people tune in Squid Game, eager to see the lengths people will go to in financial desperation, the show is pacing to be one of the streamer’s biggest shows.

Netflix executive Ted Sarandos said in September that it would “definitely be our biggest non-English language show in the world, for sure” and added it has “a very good chance” of becoming Netflix’s biggest show in history, per CNET.

Will there be another season of ‘Squid Game?’

Squid Game left off in a way where there could definitely be another season of the show. Asked about the possibility, Netflix’s Global TV head Bela Bajaria told Vulture there aren’t active plans for another season. But Netflix would be open to making it happen if Hwang was down to do it.

“He has a film and other things he’s working on,” Bajaria explained. “We’re trying to figure out the right structure for him.”

Hwang isn’t rushing to do another season, however

Bajaria’s comments come after Hwang gave an interview where he mentioned how taxing it was to write and direct all of the episodes of Squid Game. He cited that workload as the reason he’s not rushing to do another season of the show.

“In my earlier days, I’d drink half a bottle of soju (Korean alcohol) to get the creative juices flowing. I can’t do that anymore,” he told Variety. “Writing (‘Squid Game’) was harder than normal for me as it was a series, not a film. It took me six months to write and rewrite the first two episodes. Then I consulted verbally with friends, and picked up clues for improvements through my own pitching and from their responses.”

Now, his focus is the making of a movie called The KO Club, which has “a kind of inter-generational war premise.”

“I don’t have well-developed plans for ‘Squid Game 2,’” Hwang explained. “It is quite tiring just thinking about it. But if I were to do it, I would certainly not do it alone. I’d consider using a writers’ room and would want multiple experienced directors.”

Fair enough. We’ll see if a new season ever happens, but in the meantime, you can check out the first one now on Netflix.
