Sonequa Martin-Green plays the hero of Star Trek: Discovery. Michael Burnham (Martin-Green) has not been your average Starfleet officer. She doesn’t always go by the books, but sometimes her outside the box thinking saves the crew. Season 3 of her show is only going to test her further as the crew of the Discovery travel to the future.

Martin-Green was part of a Star Trek Universe panel for San Diego Comic-Con@Home on July 23. During the Q&A portion, she shared her hopes for Michael Burnham when the show returns later this year.

The future is not all right on ‘Star Trek: Discovery’

Star Trek has always presented an idealized future. By the time of Starfleet, planet Earth at least is in harmony. It’s only other worlds and alien species that cause conflicts. Star Trek: Discovery took place before The Original Series so it was a little rougher. In leaping to the future, Martin-Green says it can reflect the social struggles occurring in 2020.

I think a story like this that can give us an example of what that future might look like, I think, at least I hope, that it really holds us accountable and shows us that the work is not done. It’s about confronting ourselves and really confronting each other. We see that in this story within the legacy of this franchise. That’s really what’s going to propel us forward is confronting ourselves truthfully and confronting each other, exposing ourselves in a way we haven’t before. So, I hope that we contribute moments to the movement in that way.

Sonequa Martin-Green’s first hope for Michael Burnham in season 3

Martin-Green has two hopes for Michael in season 3. First, she just hopes the time travel works! That was a pretty drastic cliffhanger to resolve.

“First, a salvation of sorts,” Martin-Green said. “We, the crew, of Star Trek Discovery in the finale are deciding to sacrifice everything, everything that we have for the future. So there’s the obvious hope that that works, that the plan works and even logistically that we land where we’re supposed to, that we defeat Control and save the universe. There’s the inherent hope of that.”

Burnham was a brand new character to the Star Trek universe. Discovery encountered familiar characters like Spock (Ethan Peck) and Pike (Anson Mount), but only after it introduced its own crew. She’s only getting started after two seasons, so Martin-Green hopes she can continue exploring Michael’s growth in the future.

“There’s also the hope of continuing to discover myself as Burham,” Martin-Green said. “That’ll always be there, that hope of continual unveiling and finding that perfect sweet, sweet balance between all the forces that wage within me.”
