Why Some Star Wars Fans Think ‘The Rise of Skywalker’ Should be the Last Movie in the Franchise

Some believe the force isn’t strong with Disney’s set of Star Wars movies. With The Rise of Skywalker now in theaters, should Disney go forward with future Star Wars projects? Here’s what fans on social media are saying about this sequel trilogy.

Disney first acquired Lucasfilm in 2012

The force is strong with this studio. In 2012, Disney acquired Lucasfilm for $4.05 billion, according to CNBC. Disney earned the rights to merchandise and the original trilogy. Additionally, the company had the ability to create and premiere new movies.

This means that Star Wars movies previously available for binge-watching with Netflix moved to Disney’s streaming platform, entitled Disney+. The studio also released original television shows and movies. That includes an origin story about Han Solo and the 2019 release, The Rise of Skywalker.

Disney released original Star Wars content including ‘The Mandalorian’ and the sequel trilogy

Since their acquisition, Disney released its own line of original Star Wars content. That includes the franchise’s first-ever live-action series, The Mandalorian, exclusive to Disney+. They also released their sequel trilogy as the last chapters in the Skywalker Saga.

Time Magazine reports that there is another Star Wars trilogy in the works, to be written and directed by Rian Johnson. However, some viewers believe the company should stop with the last film in the Skywalker Saga, entitled The Rise of Skywalker.

Star Wars fans commented on Disney and ‘The Rise of Skywalker’

With the final movie of the sequel trilogy now in theaters, some Star Wars fans took to social media, sharing their thoughts about these spin-off movies. Primarily, some discussed the impact Disney had on the story and movies like The Last Jedi.

“Now, The Rise of Skywalker is inevitably going to make less money than Avengers: Endgame, both domestically and overseas. Certain people will use this as ammo to say Star Wars is dead – Disney ruined George Lucas’ baby and killed it dead,” said one Twitter user, during a dispute over The Last Jedi.

“Star Wars was the first film I ever saw in a theater. Loved it so much my Dad took me to see it again the very next day. It changed my life. I couldn’t care less about The Rise of Skywalker. Disney has utterly ruined this franchise. The Last Jedi was the final straw. Never again,” wrote another Twitter user.

However, some still rushed to Disney and Star Wars’ defense — and to the theaters. During its opening weekend, the 2019 release broke records for Disney, becoming one of the most popular movies released during the month.

The Rise of Skywalker may not be the best Star Wars movie and Disney might have ruined it, but still to me, it is what it is. It is part of the saga and I’m just as excited as I was many years ago,” argued one Twitter user.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is now playing in theaters. Other Star Wars movies, including A New Hope and The Force Awakens, are available for streaming on Disney’s subscription service, Disney+.
