As Fleetwood Macā€™s 1979 release, Tusk featured songs like ā€œSisters of the Moonā€ and ā€œSara.ā€ The albumā€™s title, however, was intended as a euphemism, even if it went over Stevie Nicksā€™ ā€œprudish little head.ā€

Why is Fleetwood Macā€™s album called ā€˜Tuskā€™?

Theyā€™re the band behind ā€œGypsyā€ and ā€œDreams.ā€ In 1979, Fleetwood Mac released their album, Tusk.

ā€œI think Tusk is a spectacular record,ā€ Nicks said in the liner notes to the albumā€™s 2015 reissue. ā€œWe were all down with getting heavy, but Lindsey was really trying to make it weirder and heavier than any of us were able to comprehend. But we went along. We followed him up that mountain!ā€Ā

The origins (and inspiration) behind this albumā€™s title and cover art differ based on the source. Rolling Stone mentioned inspiration from the African nature photography of Peter Beard, with the artist adding, ā€œthe album was named Tusk because of all my photographs with tusks in them.ā€

ā€˜Tuskā€™ was intended as a phallic euphemism, according to some Fleetwood Mac members

After joining the band with Lindsey Buckingham, Nicks appeared as a Fleetwood Mac singer and songwriter. She created ā€œDreamsā€ and ā€œStorms.ā€ She also appeared on Tusk, despite not liking the title ā€” even if she didnā€™t understand Tusk was a phallic euphemism at the time.Ā

ā€œThat went right over my prudish little head,ā€ Nicks said during an interview with Mojo in 2015. ā€œI wasnā€™t told that until quite a while after the record was done.ā€Ā

Even the lyrics to the title track include euphemisms for sex and phallic symbols, with the artists singing, ā€œDonā€™t say that you love me / Just tell me that you want me / Tusk / Just say that you want me / Donā€™t tell me that you / Tusk / Real savage like / Tusk.ā€

What Fleetwood Mac songs are on ā€˜Tuskā€™

As a departure from their previous projects, Tusk highlighted Buckinghamā€™s interest ā€œin punk and new wave.ā€ According to Rolling Stone, there were also influences from the Beach Boysā€™ unreleased album Smile ā€“ mainly thanks to Christine McVieā€™s relationship with Dennis Wilson.

The same website reports Tusk took a year to record and became the first album in history to cost more than $1 million. It reached No. 4 on the Billboard 200 Album Chart, a letdown after the success of Rumours.

The 1979 release was remastered in 2015 and added to Spotify. There, ā€œSaraā€ earned over 50 million plays, while ā€œTuskā€ earned over 70 million plays. Others songs from this collection include ā€œWhat Makes You Think Youā€™re the One,ā€ ā€œStorms,ā€ and ā€œThatā€™s All for Everyone.ā€Ā

Select songs from this collection were written entirely by Nicks. That includes ā€œSisters of the Moon,ā€ which some listeners interpreted to be about a dark, gothic woman. Tusk remains available on most major music platforms.Ā
