Stevie Nicks has music, clothes, and dance moves that perfectly fit her witchy, otherworldliness. But she can’t always be draped in shawls, twirling through her everyday life, right? According to Nicks, her daily activities are much more casual. She spoke about what she does and how she dresses when she isn’t the Stevie Nicks that the public has come to love.

Stevie Nicks has dedicated her life to music

Nicks always knew that music would be an essential part of her life, but she fully dedicated herself to songwriting after her first heartbreak. She was in high school, but even her parents recognized how important it was to her.

“I finished that song, hysterically crying. And I was hooked,” she said, per the book Gold Dust Woman: The Biography of Stevie Nicks by Stephen Davis. “When I played my own song later that night, I knew — from that second on — that I was not going to sing a lot of other people’s songs. I was going to write my own. From that day forward, when I was in my room playing my guitar, nobody would come in without knocking, nobody disturbed me.”

After performing in a Bay Area band and then a duo with then-boyfriend Lindsey Buckingham, Nicks joined Fleetwood Mac. Here and in her solo career, she cemented her place as one of the most celebrated musicians of her time.

She shared the pastime she favors when she’s not performing

Nicks dedicated her life to music, deliberately choosing her career over marriage or children. Despite this, she has a life outside of her magical onstage persona. She shared what she likes to do when she’s “not busy being Stevie Nicks.”

“I decorate. I just love beautiful things,” she told the Baltimore Sun, per The Nicks Fix. “I love going and looking for more beautiful things. I go to the mall, to furniture stores, all over the place. I just love beautiful things.”

One of her biggest extravagances are lamps, which she uses to perfect the mood lighting in her home.

“I’m obsessed with lighting,” she told Vanity Fair. “I’m constantly shopping for different lightbulbs. I love rainbow lightbulbs. And, also, one should not live without dimmers. Life is all about lighting.”

It might not be easy to recognize her when she’s out scouring malls for more beautiful items. Nicks explained that she doesn’t get as dressed up as she does at public events.

“I’m casual,” she said. “You can’t look like this all the time.”

Stevie Nicks said something besides music is the key to making her feel like herself

Nicks may not don her chiffon outfits and top hats in day-to-day life, but they’re integral to her onstage attire. She shared that her signature platform boots are the most important part of her wardrobe. They’re what make her feel like herself. She waits until the last moment before showtime to put them on.

“I don’t put the boots on until right before I walk up to the stage,” she told Rolling Stone. “But when my little foot goes into that boot, it is like Cinderella. All of a sudden I become me.”
