Stranger Things Season 4 is poised to be the biggest season yet. With so much anticipation and excitement for what happens next, the hit sci-fi drama will likely see some of the biggest viewership numbers in its history.

So far, there have been so many good hints about the forthcoming episodes. But what has people especially interested is the apparent return of a character previously believed to be dead.

‘Stranger Things’ Season 4 will seemingly see the return of a major character

Based on set photos from an Instagram account that posts updates on the show, it seems Dr. Brenner (Matthew Modine) might be returning for season four.

As you may recall, Dr. Brenner is a sinister research scientist who conducted cruel tests on Eleven and other subjects. He appeared to die in season one when he was attacked by a Demogorgon. But in season two, Eleven learned from a lab employee that Dr. Brenner was still alive.

Viewers later speculated that Dr. Brenner is “the American” the Russians took hostage at the end of season three. But it was later confirmed that it’s Jim Hopper.

“He is imprisoned far from home in the snowy wasteland of Kamchatka,” show creators Matt and Ross Duffer previously said in a statement (via Rotten Tomatoes), “where he will face dangers both human… and other.”

Dr. Brenner’s fate remains a secret, but there are plenty of theories, including that he could be working with the Russians. It would explain how they know so much about the Upside Down and would bring the show full circle. But there’s been no official confirmation that this is the case.

Fan reactions to Dr. Brenner’s apparent return to the show

After the photos hit the Internet, fans rushed to react, with more than 1,000 people liking the post and over 100 leaving comments.

“OH NO NO NO NO,” one person wrote as another person said, “AH SH*T… HERE WE GO AGAIN.”

A third chimed in, “Yo I was sure he will be back. I think he will help Eleven get her powers back.”

A fourth added, “I knew it. I called it in season one.”

Modine didn’t publicly respond to the speculation, but he previously teased to People that Dr. Brenner might return to the show. Comic Book reports that he also tweeted “ding dong” after the release of a season four teaser video before seemingly deleting the post.

When does ‘Stranger Things’ Season 4 come out?

TVLine reports that the fourth season is expected to premiere in the fall of 2021. But there’s no official release date just yet.

It really boils down to whether the show can avoid complications caused by the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, which has forced shutdowns on a number of productions. So far, it seems like things are on pace for a 2021 premiere, but we’ll see.
