When the world was introduced to Stranger Things Season 1 in July of 2016, many audiences became a little more familiar with the popular ‘80s role-playing game Dungeons and Dragons. The characters on the show are big fans of the game. The kids often use names and terms from the game to describe the supernatural stuff happening in Hawkins, Indiana. Now that the Stranger Things Season 4 titles have been released, we have a better idea of who the big bad will be. It looks like the series is sticking with the Dungeons and Dragons theme for another season and Vecna could be the monster.

Who or what is Vecna in ‘Stranger Things’ Season 4?

The implied monster for Stranger Things Season 4 is something called Vecna. According to the Forgotten Realms Wiki, Vecna “was a once-human lich from Oerth who ascended to godhood.”

Its history is a little more complicated than other monsters because of the contradictory accounts of its origin. The wiki continues, “Most accounts stated that he was originally a human wizard from Oerth, although some reports claimed that he was a half-elf. After having become an extremely powerful wizard and starting to fear for his own mortality, Vecna was taught by Orcus how to achieve undeath, later becoming one of the most powerful liches ever in existence.”

So far, none of the monsters in Stranger Things are exact replicas of the monsters from Dungeons and Dragons. Though, they seem to have similar features. This could mean a couple of things for Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown,) Will (Noah Schnapp,) and the rest of the party.

Could one of the new characters introduced in ‘Stranger Things’ Season 4 be Vecna?

As the wiki stated, Vecna was once a human wizard. None of the characters from the series have dabbled in any sort of wizardry. However, fans will remember that Will Byers’ character when playing Dungeons and Dragons is Will the Wise, and he’s a wizard. Many fans believe that Will has to have some connection to the Upside Down. Both the Demogorgon and the Mind Flayer seemed to seek Will out. In Stranger Things Season 3, Will was able to tell when the Mind Flayer was near. Of course, when the Demogorgon took him in season 1, it could have just been a case of wrong place, wrong time.

Stranger Things Season 4 introduces us to a handful of new characters, one of which is Peter Ballard. Peter is described as “a caring man who works as an orderly at a psychiatric hospital. Tired of the brutality he witnesses day after day, will Peter finally take a stand?” There’s been some buzz about Peter on Reddit, and some Redditors believe he could be Vecna.
