Back in September 2021, Nintendo sent the internet into a frenzy when it announced the release date and cast of the animated Super Mario Bros. movie, including big names like Chris Pratt, Jack Black, and more. However, after dropping that bombshell, the video game giant returned to radio silence on the project. Even the cast members have remained mostly quiet. Finally, Charlie Day, the voice of Luigi, has broken his silence on Super Mario Bros. — well, sort of.

Charlie Day joins Chris Pratt and Anya Taylor-Joy as the voices of the ‘Super Mario Bros.’ movie

Nintendo first announced the Super Mario Bros. movie in 2018, revealing that Nintendo game designer Shigeru Miyamoto and Illumination Entertainment CEO Chris Meledandri would co-produce. However, very few details emerged after that, leading some fans to wonder if the project would really continue. Nintendo insisted over the next few years that the film had been making progress.

Finally, Nintendo unveiled the voice cast and release date during its September Direct in 2021. In addition to Charlie Day as Luigi, the Super Mario Bros. movie stars Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, and Jack Black as Bowser. Other famous names include Keegan-Michael Key, Seth Rogen, Fred Armisen, and more.

The casting news received mixed reactions from Mario fans. Many found it hard to picture Pratt as Mario. On the other hand, some fans felt Day and Taylor-Joy were perfect fits.

Charlie Day joked about his ‘top secret’ work as Luigi in the ‘Super Mario Bros.’ movie

Pratt, Taylor-Joy, and Black have expressed their excitement about the movie in recent months. However, they didn’t tease any details on the project itself. As Day revealed on Jimmy Kimmel Live! in January, there might be a reason for that.

According to the It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia actor, Nintendo has been very secretive about the movie. So secretive that even the cast members aren’t entirely sure what they’re getting into.

“I’d love to tell you all about it, but they are top secret with this stuff,” Day said with a lighthearted tone. “This is serious stuff!”

Kimmel asked Day if he’s read through the script, and Day admitted that he “knows nothing” about it. He shows up to work, delivers his lines as instructed, and leaves. Apparently, the actors don’t even work together, as Nintendo brings everyone in separately.

“There’s like, two guys in overalls with hammers that are like, ‘Don’t you tell nobody nothin’ about this, Charlie,'” he joked. “Mario’s probably in the know, but they don’t tell Luigi anything.”

While there’s a level of satire to Day’s comments, the interview is certainly intriguing enough to make fans wonder what this movie will be about. Nintendo has not provided any plot details, aside from the classic Mario story of the plumber hero rescuing Princess Peach.

It may be some time before Nintendo finally pulls back the curtain on the Super Mario Bros. movie. For now, Miyamoto insists they’re making good progress. He briefly addressed the film via a Nintendo investor Q&A in November, revealing that it was almost finished.

“I have great expectations for the Super Mario CG-animated film. For decades, our approach has been to bring smiles to consumers by creating each product with great care,” Miyamoto explained. “With visual content as well, we want to continue to create content that brings smiles to generations of consumers around the world.”

The Super Mario Bros. movie arrives in U.S. theaters on Dec. 21, 2022.
