When it comes to classic comedies, there are quite a few. Step Brothers, The Hangover, Bridesmaids, and Old School are just a few movies that audiences have grown to love over the past few years. Amongst the fan-favorites is, of course, Superbad. The movie has grown extremely popular since its 2007 premiere, and some fans might be surprised to learn the story behind the penis drawings that appeared in Superbad.

Superbad was a huge success for many reasons. From the spot-on characters to their hysterical dialogue, the movie didn’t disappoint. Sources like CinemaBlend have gone as far as to dub the production a “cult classic.”

Seth, a high school senior played by Jonah Hill, was struggling with moving on to college, especially without his BFF Evan. Michael Cera took on the role of Evan, Seth’s slightly more responsible partner in crime, as the pair try to recreate the ultimate last hurrah before graduation. Of course, they couldn’t have done it without Fogell, AKA McLovin.

The three teenagers found themselves in the throes of an evening filled with many unexpected and comical twists and turns. Amongst the talented cast was the one-and-only Seth Rogen. Rogen played the part of Officer Michaels alongside his partner, Officer Slater, who Bill Hader played. Superbad also marked the debut of Emma Stone’s acting career on the big screen, and as her fans and followers already know, it would be the first of many roles the actor would be praised for.

Superbad had many trademark features and elements to the film, and oddly enough, the penis drawings were definitely one of them. Fans of the film probably can remember the scene of Seth recalling a peculiar childhood memory. The flashback intended to explain the dynamic between Seth and Becca revealed Seth’s obsession with drawing pictures of penises when he was younger.

As the story went, realizing it was far from normal, Seth used his Ghostbusters‘ lunch box to secretly store his masterpieces. However, the lunchbox became compromised one day in fourth grade when Becca accidentally uncovered one of Seth’s confidential creations.

Fans of Superbad might be surprised to learn that the drawings in the movie were actually all created by Evan Goldberg’s brother, David Goldberg. Evan Goldberg, a well-known screenwriter in Hollywood, typically associated with movies like Knocked Up, Pineapple Express, and This Is the End, wrote and worked alongside Rogen to create Superbad

IMDb shared that David Goldberg produced nearly one thousand illustrations for the film, but, in the end, only a handful of the well-done and creative penises were featured.

Few things are as memorable and talked about as the penis drawings from Superbad, and the team worked hard to make sure they were included in all of their glory. However, according to IMDb, the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) had a lot of stipulations and requirements regarding the penises. Everything from the number of Veins to the level of the erections was scrutinized.

Of course, since it was a flashback scene involving child actors, matters got even more tricky. However, the penis drawings could make the cut by thinking outside the box, and the young talent never had to see them. While filming, Laura Marano, the actor who played Young Becca, received a totally different penis-free drawing, and the footage was edited to look differently. More recently, Marano has been recognized for her work in films like Lady Bird and The Perfect Date
