The CW’s latest DC series, Superman & Lois, has become one of the network’s most talked-about shows. But within weeks of the Feb. 23 premiere, the series is going on hiatus. Here’s why you won’t see new episodes of Superman & Lois until late spring.

What is ‘Superman & Lois’ about?

Superman & Lois is not like any Superman story seen on screen. The show follows now married Clark Kent (Tyler Hoechlin) and Lois Lane (Elizabeth Tulloch) as the parents of teen sons. The pair first appeared on episodes of Supergirl, The Flash, DC Legends of Tomorrow, and Arrow.

The series premiere finds Clark and Lois’s twins, John (Jordan Elsass) and Jordan (Alex Garfin), utterly unaware of their father’s abilities. The family leaves Metropolis and moves to Smallville when Clark’s mom, Martha, unexpectedly dies.

Why you won’t get new episodes of ‘Superman & Lois’

Many television shows headed back to production in late 2020, with various pandemic safety protocols in place. But some have experienced positive COVID-19 cases on set, temporarily halting production. And according to Superman & Lois star Tyler Hoechlin, that’s precisely what happened on set while filming earlier this season.

“So we’ve had two COVID shutdowns,” Heochlin told TV Insider. “Everyone’s fine. Everyone’s healthy. But you know what dude, we’re trying to shoot a tv show in the middle of a global pandemic. So you know it’s one of those things.”

“I think it’s great to be optimistic,” he continued. “We were definitely ambitious, and trying to get it going when we did, and to get it on-air as quickly as we did. But at the end of the day, you know these things happen in this world. Right now, hopefully, the fans will be understanding that these are not normal circumstances.”

When is the show going on hiatus?

The series premiere of Superman & Lois aired on Feb. 23, with new episodes dropping on The CW every Tuesday. But fans will have five full episodes before the show goes on hiatus.

The fifth episode, titled “The Beacon,” will air on March 23. After that, the series will go on a short break, with the CW airing new episodes of Supergirl season 6 in its place.

When will we get new episodes of ‘Superman & Lois’?

After its nearly two-month-long hiatus, Superman & Lois will return with new episodes on May 18 with episode 6. The synopsis or title of the episode has yet to be revealed. But it will continue where “The Beacon” left off.

When you’re just getting into a show, waiting months for new episodes is agonizing. But fans can take comfort in knowing that Superman & Lois has already been renewed for season 2. And that means there is plenty more of the Kent family’s story on the way.
