‘Supernatural’ Alum Jared Padalecki Explains Twitter Reaction

It was the end of the world as Supernatural fans knew it when the 15-season show concluded. The series leads, Jensen Ackles, Jared Padalecki, and Misha Collins, bid an emotional farewell when they wrapped filming. Months later, Ackles announced a Supernatural prequel was in the works. It was a cheerful moment until fellow celebrity Padalecki revealed he was not included in the project.

The Walker star came forward to explain the Twitter incident.

What happened with Jared Padalecki?

In June 2021, Ackles shared that he and his wife, Daneel, will work on a Supernatural prequel as executive producers. The new series is one of the first projects from their production company, Chaos Machine Productions.

After commenters praised Ackles, Padalecki tweeted a response to his former co-star.

The Walker actor’s post sounded the alarm for fans. He then clarified in another tweet, “This is the first time I’ve heard of it. I’m gutted.”

Padalecki later tweeted to Supernatural‘s co-executive producer, Robbie Thompson, who will also work on the prequel. In a since-deleted tweet, Padalecki wrote, “Et tu, brute?? Wow. What a truly awful thing you’ve done. #Bravo you coward.”

The former Winchester followed up, requesting his followers to avoid hateful language. Nevertheless, the damage was done.

Padalecki ‘respect[s] [Ackles’] opinion’

In a new interview with The New York Times, Padalecki opened up about the infamous Twitter spat: “It was just one of those things that because it was online, and people were assuming I was part of it, I really wanted to just say: ‘Hey, I’m not keeping a secret from you guys. I just don’t know about this.'”

Padalecki mentioned the conversation he and Ackles had the next day. He revealed that Ackles explained the prequel is “not picked up yet” and “it’s not even written yet.”

“I should be old enough to know better than to put something out there and expect that people will understand,” Padalecki said. “It’s hard to tweet a specific tone. If you write it online, it’s like, ‘Oh, he doesn’t know! They’re going to kill each other! The world is ending!’ And I’m like, ‘No, no, no.’ I try to avoid social media as much as possible because of that.”

Fortunately, the two former monster hunters appear to be on good terms. “I love Jensen deeply,” Padalecki mentioned. “He’s my brother–he has been for many years, and he always will be, no matter what. He’s spent more time on camera with me than anybody probably ever will, so he knows my strengths and weaknesses more than I do, and vice versa. I respect his opinion…He knows and I know how much Supernatural means to both of us, and it wasn’t a secret he was trying to keep, necessarily.”

Hopefully, the brothers can “carry on” together like the “wayward sons” they’ve always been.

What is the prequel about?

Deadline first confirmed in June 2021 the prequel, The Winchesters, focuses on Sam and Dean’s parents, John and Mary. According to the report, the project is in development at The CW. Ackles will reprise his role as Dean Winchester as the series’ narrator.

The prequel will show John and Mary’s love story and how they saved the world.

“After Supernatural wrapped its 15th season, we knew it wasn’t over,” Ackles explained. “Because like we say in the show, ‘nothing ever really ends, does it?’ When Danneel and I formed Chaos Machine Productions, we knew the first story we wanted to tell was the story of John and Mary Winchester, or rather the Supernatural origin story. I always felt like my character, Dean, would have wanted to know more about his parents’ relationship and how it came to be. So I love the thought of having him take us on this journey.”

Before fans found out Padalecki wasn’t involved, they immediately reacted to the prequel’s storyline. Most complained that this backstory doesn’t benefit the original show. Not only that, but most dedicated fans don’t like John and Mary.
