Amy and Jonah’s breakup on ‘Superstore’

“California Part 2” aired on NBC on Nov. 5 and follows Amy on her last day at Cloud 9 before she departs for her new job with Zephra in California. While Jonah originally planned to move with Amy, as the move draws closer Amy begins to doubt her relationship with Jonah.

Toward the end of the episode, the two have a heated discussion about the future of their relationship. While Jonah does not propose, he asks Amy if she can ever see herself marrying him as they already live together and raise her son Parker together.

“Do you want to marry me?” He asks.

“I don’t know!” Amy replies.

“That’s not an answer! Yes or no?” Jonah presses.

“Then no!” Amy answers.

Amy asks Jonah what will happen if she realizes this was all a mistake and he tells her, “I’m guessing you’ll know where to find me.”

How their breakup came to be on ‘Superstore’

While speaking with TVLine, co-showrunners Gabe Miller and Jonathan Green broke down Amy and Jonah’s decision to breakup.

“As much as she loves Jonah, and as great as she thinks he is… It was important to us, also, to see that maybe even she thinks that she [made] a rash decision. She doesn’t want to lose Jonah, and she’s torn,” Miller said of Amy’s decision.

Green added, “We really liked the idea that she doesn’t know if she’s doing the right thing. It’s just what is feeling right to her [in the moment]. If it feels a little out of the blue to people, you know, it’s sort of catching her off-guard, too.”

The two might have a future

While Amy and Jonah’s breakup seemed inevitable with Ferrera leaving the show, Miller and Green think there is a chance the two characters could work things out down the line.

“We feel like the door is still open the way that we left things. By the end, what they [both] realize is that they are making an adult decision. They’re not on the same page about their future right now, but who knows? They still could find their way back to each other,” said Miller.

For the time being, Ferrera is no longer on the show, and fans of Superstore can expect Jonah to do his best to move on.

“He tries to throw himself into some other things to distract himself… He realizes that he’s still working at the store when he thought he would be moving on to California and a new life, so he pursues some other job prospects, and he considers trying to move up at the store,” Miller told TVLine.

“Floor Supervisor,” the third episode of Season 6 of Superstore, premieres on NBC on Nov. 12.
