Prince Harry and Meghan Markle welcomed their first child today and, while they aren’t following a lot of the typical traditions, the usual formal birth announcement was placed on an easel at Buckingham Palace. There was something decidedly different about their announcement, however, as compared to Baby Sussex’s royal cousins.

Buckingham Palace displays the baby announcement

A framed notice of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s baby announcement was placed on an ornate golden easel for passersby to read. Of course, the baby news was also announced on the Sussexes’ Instagram account as well as the other royal social media accounts.

The announcement is a tradition for new royal births, with Baby Sussex’s announcement reading: “The Queen and the Royal Family are delighted at the news that Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Sussex was safely delivered of a son at 05:26am today. Her Royal Highness and her child are both doing well.”

How Baby Sussex’s easel announcement is different

Fans of the royals are well versed in this Buckingham Palace easel announcement tradition and some noticed immediately that there’s something very different with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s announcement.

Following the births of Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis, each of their announcements briefly shared the arrival news — but they also had the signatures from the doctors who were present for each of the births, with Dr. Guy Thorpe-Beeston appearing on all three announcements and Dr. Alan Farthing appearing on the announcements for Charlotte and Louis’ births.

By comparison, Prince Harry and Markle’s announcement doesn’t list any doctors who were present at Baby Sussex’s birth. Could this support the rumor that Meghan had a home birth at Frogmore Cottage?

Prince Harry and Markle’s Instagram account thanked the public

In addition to revealing the arrival of their first born child, Prince Harry and Markle used their Instagram announcement to extend a thank you to the public

They shared:

“We are pleased to announce that Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Sussex welcomed their firstborn child in the early morning on May 6th, 2019. Their Royal Highnesses’ son weighs 7lbs. 3oz.

The Duchess and baby are both healthy and well, and the couple thank members of the public for their shared excitement and support during this very special time in their lives.”

Prince Harry gushed in a speech to the media

Prince Harry didn’t hold back his excitement when he spoke to the media following the baby announcement, as he gushed about their new addition and his wife’s role.

He shared with reporters: “I’m very excited to announce that Meghan and myself had a baby boy early this morning, a very healthy boy. Mother and baby are doing incredibly well. It’s been the most amazing experience I can ever possibly imagine.”

He continued: “How any woman does what they do is beyond comprehension but we’re both absolutely thrilled and so grateful for all the love and support from everybody out there. It’s been amazing so we just wanted to share this with everybody.”

He also remarked how “absolutely incredible” the birth was, noting, “I’m so incredibly proud of my wife.” Prince Harry added: “As every father and parent will ever say, you know, your baby is absolutely amazing, but this little thing is absolutely to-die-for, so I’m just over the moon.”
