Sydney Sweeney has been to her fair share of red carpets in the last few years. Thanks to the various projects she’s been cast in, she’s had plenty of opportunities to attend the star-studded events. From films like Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood to TV shows like The White Lotus, the actor-producer seems to be posing for eager photographers every couple of months.

Sydney Sweeney has social anxiety

Because Sweeney has taken some great red carpet photos, most people would assume she feels right at home at the events. However, The Players Table producer actually gets very nervous prior to each event. In an interview with Cosmopolitan, Sweeney admitted that she’s more of a homebody and actually prefers smaller events.

“I have social anxiety,” Sweeney admitted. “I prefer intimate gatherings. I’d like everyone to pile up on the couch and play board games or watch TV. I can’t do the pointless standing around and drinking and getting nowhere in life.” But if The Handmaid’s Tale alum has anxiety about red carpets, how does she get through them? Sweeney actually has a clever trick to psych herself up that she recently shared with Glamour.

What trick does the MMA fighter use to handle red carpets?

“If I’m not feeling the carpet, I just tell myself it’s a picture and it’ll be hopefully gone in 24 hours,” Sweeney revealed. “I get nervous before every carpet because I get nervous when I have to be Syd. I feel more confident when I’m different characters, because people are judging the characters and not me. I get nervous before every single one, so I kind of pretend to be different characters when I go onto these carpets and do it that way.”

One thing that helps her embody different characters is her choice of clothing. Sweeney seems to think of her gowns as costumes and they help her portray the character that she’s presenting to the red carpet. She may get nervous about the events themselves, but she’s learned to have a lot of fun with discovering new designers and playing with her personal style. In an interview with Story + Rain, Sweeney explained her eclectic tastes.

Sweeney loves mixing up her fashion choices for red carpets

“Sometimes I feel very intimidated by fashion because of how laid back I am, but when it comes to the red carpet or press, I love mixing it up and finding different designers,” Sweeney shared. “Yesterday I had a press junket day and had four different looks over the course of five hours, and I loved it.”

Clearly, Sweeney has tricks to help her deal with her red carpet nerves. She also has seemingly developed a post-red carpet ritual to help her decompress. The Washington native has frequently treated herself to fast food after her glitzy events. She’s even done some photoshoots at a bodega and at a 7-Eleven, so clearly she manages to have fun at some point during the evening.
