Sylvester Stallone is confirmed for 2021’s ‘The Suicide Squad’

When the motley crew of villains returns to the screen next year, audiences will see some familiar faces from the first movie, but James Gunn is putting a new spin on things.

Described by producer Peter Safran as a “gritty 1970s war movie,” The Suicide Squad will see Margot Robbie return as Harley Quinn along with Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag and Jai Courtney as Boomerang.

But Sylvester Stallone, who’s used to playing characters in combat, recently filmed his part. The actor did a post-and-delete video on Instagram where he said he was on his way to shoot with Gunn and the movie looks “spectacular.” Stallone added that he can’t reveal more about this role, but he’ll see fans at the movies.

Gunn also hit Twitter Instagram with a photo of himself with Stallone with the caption, “Always love working with my friend @officialslystallone & our work today on #TheSuicideSquad was no exception. Despite Sly being an iconic movie star, most people still don’t have any idea what an amazing actor this guy is.”

Stallone thanked him for the compliment, and everyone wanted to know more. Though fans asked Gunn about Stallone’s role, he would only confirm the Expendables actor is in the film. People are excited are hedging bets on who he’s playing.

Fans guess about Stallone’s character

Left to their powers of deduction, some fans believe Stallone will play Rick Flag, Sr. With Gunn’s penchant for one of the older versions of the DC canon, it’s thought he will pull Rick Flag’s dad into the story as a captive. In the comic book lore, Flag Sr. used to head the original Task Force X and was known for his exceptional skills as a trainer and killer.

Dude is a legend and a survivor. With the war theme for the new film, some Redditors think Flag Sr. will be the target of a rescue operation for the Suicide Squad.

Others posit that Stallone could be making a small cameo as another hero who doesn’t survive that long. It could be anyone. On Reddit, there’s conversation that he could die a quick and hilarious death like Brad Pitt in Deadpool.

John Cena and other newbies are in the cast

John Cena, Idris Elba, and Steve Agee are also in the upcoming film starring as Peacemaker, Bloodsport, and King Shark, respectively.

The Suicide Squad is said not to be a direct sequel, but will have Gunn’s brand of humor, upped special effects, and jokes galore. Pete Davidson is set to play Blackguard, Storm Reid will be Tyla, Alicia Braga appears as Sol Soria, and Taika Waititi’s role will be a surprise.

The Suicide Squad is due to hit theaters on Aug. 6, 2021.
