When it comes to his dating life, it looks like Drake has no qualms about lettings his fans known intimate and personal details. The Toronto rapper is known for putting his feelings and experiences into his music. Also, we know he’s been linked to celebrity women like Rihanna, Kylie Jenner, and Jennifer Lopez among others.

However, his recent revelation about singer SZA had fans spiraling. Despite her mega-talent, SZA has always kept her personal life out of the spotlight. In fact, she’s never been linked to any high-profile person and she only discusses aspects of her personal life in her music.

Therefore, fans were shocked when the “Marvin’s Room” rapper revealed that he and SZA were in a relationship some years ago. Now that the “Hit Different” singer has confirmed it, this is what we know.

Drake claimed he dated SZA back in 2008

Though the 33-year-old rapper and the 29-year-old singer had never been romantically or musically linked before, the former actor has always shown the singer a ton of love and respect. A few months ago, amid the release of SZA’s self-directed video for “Hit Different” Drake shared a snapshot from the video on his Instagram stories.

He captioned the gorgeous photo of SZA using her given name. He wrote, “Solana is the [chef’s] kiss.” Now, Drake has revealed that he and SZA actually dated some years ago.

In his verse on 21 Savage’s new song, “Mr. Right Now” Drake raps about the CTRL singer saying,

Turn your phone off, take your clothes off/I’m a sav’, but I f*** her to a slow song/Yeah, said she wanna f*** to some SZA, wait/’Cause I used to date SZA back in ’08/ If you cool with it, baby, she can still play.

Fans began to speculate about SZA and Drake’s relationship

For several days, SZA did not say anything about Drake’s claims. In fact, she unfollowed the Toronto-born rapper on social media and she posted a meme about people being in her business. However, fans began scratching their head when they considered the timing of their relationship.

Since SZA did not turn 18 until the end of 2008, fans were speculating that Drake’s relationship with her would have been inappropriate since she was underage for the majority of 2008. She would’ve been 17 and Drake would have been 21.

All of the rumors and assumptions forced the singer to come forward about the true details about her relationship with the “Nice For What” rapper.

Inside SZA and Drake’s relationship

Though we’re sure she doesn’t relish putting her personal business in the streets, SZA just clarified some details about her relationship with Drake. She tweeted,

So it was actually 2009 lol. In this case a year of poetic rap license mattered lol. I think he just innocently rhymed 08 with wait. Anyone who really knows me and was around during this time can confirm…it’s all love and peace. 

The singer went on to explain why she came forward with these details. “I just didn’t want anybody thinking anything underage or creepy was happening,” she said. “Completely innocent. Lifetimes ago.”

It looks like SZA and Drake really were a thing just as the rapper exploded in the music industry, but we just missed it.
